Hearst Castle is a National Historic Landmark mansion located on the Central Coast of California, United States. It was designed by architect Julia Morgan between 1919 and 1947 for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, who died in 1951.
Mr Hearst could only start it's construction after both his parents died. They called him "wasteful Willy" and did not approve his spendings. William henrited the land and built on it. By the time of his parents death, he was a milionarie by his own means.
He inherited the land, which had grown to 250,000 acres (1,012 km2) and fourteen miles of coastline, from his mother Phoebe Hearst in 1919.
Just look at the view from one of the pools...
As soon as he had ownership of the land, he contacted Julia Morgan, the architect and asked her to draw a bungalo to sit on top of the hill. His words were something to this effect:
I would like to build something upon the hill at San Simeon. I get tired of going up there and camping in tents. I’m getting a little too old for that. I’d like to get something that would be a little more comfortable
Picture of one of the swimming pools. He called it Neptune and imported many sculptures from italy and greece to adorn it. This pool was rebuilt several times, before it was finally concluded. It took 12 years (1924 - 1936) for Mr Hearst to be happy with it.

In 1957, the Hearst Corporation donated the property to the state of California. Since that time it has been maintained as a state historic park where the estate, and its considerable collection of art and antiques, is open for public tours. Despite its location far from any urban center, the site attracts roughly one million visitors per year.
Members of the Hearst family can use the castle facilities and swimming pool, but they have to call the government and book it in advance. The tours are then cancelled and the art objects protected. They are not allowed to spend the night, but they can for example, have their Xmas dinner there.
the manicured gardens and extensive views are very impressive. everything you can see in the horizon, belongs to the Hearst family (only the house was donated and the government was given the right to use the private road to access it).

When William was only 10 years old, his mother took him on a 1.5 year trip to Europe, where he had acess to museums, cathedrals and art in general. He never forgot this trip and his inspiration to build and decorate this house came from that very trip.

As well as gorgeous gardens, Mr Hearts had a whole zoo in his property. he had many exotic animals and treated them better (with more space and better conditions) than the zoos did back them. In his private zoo he had bears, cangurus, zebras and inumerous other animals
Ele tinha ursos, cangurus, zebras e muitos outros bichos.
