Eu já fui chic / I was chic once...

Once upon a time I owed a Silver rain perfume, from la Praire.
Then I dropped the bottle, it broke obviously, and I no longer owed one ( or will ever own another one).
I quickly trew a t shirt over the puddle and made sure that at least my drawer will smell nice for a while...

buying a business is easy!

A franquia é conhecida e faz sucesso no mundo inteiro.
Agora me diz: posso ficar tranquila pq o ninja já morreu ou a alma penada vai vir me assombrar?

We are looking to buy a business in the United States and the whole process is much more complicated than it seems. The 'books' often do not reflect the reality of the business, and the sellers try to inflate the earnings to make it more attractive to the buyers...
Apart from all the normal things, there are the difficulties of buying a business from overseas, in a foreign country.
Yesterday we found a franchise that seemed to be perfect. The store  opened  12 years ago. Profits seemed solid and constant. since then The product is quite attractive. The franchise is well known and successful worldwide.
After several conversations, all seemed good and we were about to make an offer, but as soon as I hung up the phone, I had a funny feeling in my stomach and wrote a quick e mail to the agent:
- How is security in the area the store is? I'll let my girls work alone at times and I need to know they will be safe. The guy responds:- Three months ago, an Asian guy got into the shop dressed as a Ninja treatening the shop owner's kids ( who were workinga t the time) with a samurai sword.
The Asian guy seems to be a well known drug addicted in the suburb.
One of the kids grabbed a weapon they have in store (WHAT?) And killed the guy with two shots ...Now tell me - what would happen if I did not ask the question? When was he planning to tell me these lil details?
A mother's sixth sense never fails!

To help Lia with her stomach pains we tried everything, including holy water.
One day I noticed the holy jar was full to the top, even though Lia had been drinking for a couple of days already.
When I asked my housemaid, she replied, very proud:
- That water was old. I trew it ou, washed the jug and got her clean water.
:-)

What should I say to that?

O trem leito / overnight train

Façam as contas.

After the ordeal to get into the train station ( which was crowded to no end), I managed to find my wagon and my berth. I was quite excited (and exhausted).
My bed was on the top and I struggled a bit to get up and put my suit case in bed with me ( I did not trust to leave it on the floor – anyone could take it and run before I realized what was happening).
Soon after, a Swiss guy came in and asked me if I could please change places with his girlfriend – they were travelling together but were booked in different wagons.
I was tired, sorted and settled into my berth, and to be honest I did not want to go. At all. So I said something like a half NO.
I told him I preferred not to change, but if the other two people also did not want to change places, I would go, so he could be with his girl.
I confess I set ou to do my positive thinking that sounded more like a negative thinking:
-          I do not want to go! I will not go! No! No! No!

And tired as  I was, a drifted a bit. Then two Vietnamese guys came in and told him they were together. Well, obviously my thinking failed miserably and I offered to go to her cabin.
I don’t think I ever met a sweeter guy. He was kind and polite and very very nice. A gentleman. He carried my suitcase, said I could have a look and then decide if I would like to go or not and if I did not, it would be ok.
I assured him it would not be a problem at all. All cabins were the same, i would not mind one bit.
When we got there I saw the shock in his eyes. In his girlfriend cabin there were 13 other people, all scattered over the beds, making it home. Adults and kids all crammed up together, making it look like more like a ghetto than a train cabin.
The pretty girlfriend was on the top bunk and I looked the other way. I don’t think I would be able to handle it if I looked her in the eye.
The guy ( sweet as before) looked at me, shook his head and gave me an understanding look.
-          I am really, really sorry, but I am very tired, I don’t think I can handle it.
I hope he forgave me. I went back to my nice, quite and sweet cabin. He changed places with the girl. I felt a bit guilty, but my sense of self protection did not let me do anything different.
In the end he will have the story to tell his granbdkids, all i will have is a good night sleep. I am sure he got the best deal.

Taxi

- Trem! tchuck tchuck tchuck

Final Feliz!

Today I set out on my solo trip. After a massage to stock on pampering, I waved down a taxi and showed him the address where I want to go. The taxi driver was so kind and helpful i thought about calling my friend to show off a bit.
When the drive started, I heard him on the phone, repeating something that sounded like the address of the train station. He was probably letting someone know where he was taking me. Then he made another call, similar one. And another. God, this guy has to tell his whereabiouts to lots of people. How strange...
When he finally heard what he wanted, he looked art me and said:
-       Ho Chi Minh city?
-          No. Hue.
-          You go Ho Chi Minh?
-          I go Hue.
-          Airplane?
-          ??
The my penny dropped. He was asking for directions, and probably told someone I had a suitcase and they decided I must be going to the airport.
-          No! Train.
-          Airport.
-          Train! Tchuc, tchuc, tchuc

He seemed to agree, but i was not convinced. By then, my messages to and from Fabi went from “How funny, he does not know where to go, I may be back for dinner” to SHIT! He really doesn’t. I am screwed!
Fabi called a friend who called her maid who speaks good English. After two phone calls we established the guy had o clue where he was going, but “would try his best”.
I had a hissy fit in the back seat, yelled until he stopped and got out.
Time was running out, I could not miss my train.
Before getting into the next train I made sure he spoke on the phone to the Vietnamese lady who was helping me . In a matter of minutes he delivered me to the train station and all went well.
I must say the first driver had already passed the train station and was going away from it. It was  a good thing my instincts made me doubt him and get out!!

Happy end

só em Bahrain/it only happens in Bahrain

Eu estava prestes a gritar desatei a gritar..

I missed a call from a real state agent I work with, so as soon as I could, I called her back.
A strange voice replies:
- She is still in surgery. Please call later.
- Wait! What? Surgery? What is happening?
I am very confused, as I saw this woman the evening before and she did not say anything about surgery.
- She is still in surgery. call later.
- I heard that. Please explain what is happening.
- She will tell you when she can
By then my patience was running very thin. I was about to yell yelled.
- I need to know what is happening NOW. I am not waiting. You will tell me where she is, what happened, what kind of surgery she is having. She called me less than an hour ago. Was it an accident? Where is she now? In which hospital?
All scenarios were running through my head. Why did she call me? We are not friends. She obviously needs some help, but what? Does she need me to pick her kid up from school? Does she need me to call anyone? Does she need me to go to the hospital? Does she...
- She is in surgery, I told you.
Then I lost it and upgraded my polite yelling to a hysterical screaming.
- WHERE IS SHE? HOSPITAL? WHICH ONE?
- She is in Seef, in the dentist.

I was not sure if I should just drive by and slap the lady or if I should go and have an ice cream. Or a glass of wisky.

PS - I confirmed my tickets to Vietnam. I will spend Sunday in Dubai and arrive in Vietnam 5pm on Monday. My journey starts soon.

só em Bahrain... Life in Bahrain

**************************

I get to the hotel to pick up a family who is waiting for me, and ask the receptionist to call them and let them know I have arrived.
5 minutes later she says:
- They are not picking up. It is engaged.
- Keep trying, please.
- It is broken. Since this morning.
...
- Have you thought about sending the bellboy to knock on their door?

Trauma prá vida toda / Scars for life...

++++++++++++++++++++++

Fábio and I raced each other to the TV room. I always play to win, so there would be no way I would let him beat me, so when I won, I burst into teh room yelling:

- I WON!

In the TV room, my younger child was entertaining a friend. I slammed the door closed and rushed back up. I was on my underware.
After I changed, I got back to the TV, told my daughter off and explained to the boy there was no way I was paying for his therapy. he better find a way to get out of the trauma himself...

Marketing direto

Passamos o dia no hospital. Fabio, Lia e eu.
Olha a conversa:

- Oi! O que ela tem?
- Dor de estomago. Nós estamos tentando descobrir o que é.
- Tomara que descubram rápido.
- É. Tomara.
- Então. Eu sou médico aqui.
- hmmm
- Reumatologista.
- ok

******************************************

We spent the day in the hospital. Fabio, Lia and me. In the evening, Renata, Silvana and Khalifa came to visit us and it was really nice, the atmosphere was light, we chatted a bit, we laughed a bit and Lili got lots of affection and various gifts. With the full  "house" , Fabio took the opportunity to leave, to spend some time with Anita, in the midst of this turmoil,  she has not had much of our attention.A little later, Anita and Fabio returned to the hospital for the last visit of the day and a goodnight kiss. When everyone was gone, Lia felt bored, and we decided to walk up and down the hospital halls.Look at the conversation:- Hi! What does she have?- Stomach pain. We're trying to figure out what it is.- I hope they find out fast.- Me too. Hopefully they will.- I am a doctor here.- Hmmm- Rheumatologist.- Ok- If you need a rheumatologist, I'm available.- Thank you- Write down my number  on your mobile- What?- Write down my number. if you need a rheumatologist or someone you know needs one, you can call me- Oh, ok.The guy spelled his name, phone number and made sure I had written  it down right. To end his speech, he said:- I also take care of osteoporosis, if you want to come for check up, I am available. If you want  to see if you have osteoporosis or if you are losing bone density, I am at your disposal ...

The thing is really bad here in Bahrain. Now doctors stay in hospital halls, chasing patients?

O beduino maluco / Crazy bedouin

Pic from net

Graças a Deus nada disso aconteceu.
O beduíno ficou extremamente desconcertado, e pareceu ate preocupado.
Imagina o meu onde tinha ido parar.
SUBIU NO BURRINHO JUNTO COMIGO!
Minha ansiedade e meu medo aumentaram muito. Queria sair correndo e gritando histérica, mas correr pra onde? Correr pra quem?
Pedi pra voltar.
O beduino nao podia fazer nada comigo, então comecou a bater no burrinho dele, furioso.
Meu coracao gelou, mas eu nao falei nada. Pobre Monica.
O casal concordou, mas nao me deu muita bola nao.
O beduino ia pra longe e voltava onde eu estava, ia e voltava, ia e voltava.
Me defendeu comos e me conhecesse há anos.

Fomos ate a rua do meu hotel.

O molequinho estava enfurecido. E deu o cartão dele para elas me entregarem...

Será que ele achou que eu ia ligar?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

After a wonderful tour, where the Bedouin took me to see wonderful places, I got on Monica (the donkey, not the friend) and started the path downwards. For the first time during this tour,  I was afraid. The Bedouin, who had been super kind and considerate, seemed like another person. Perhaps he had expected me to give gratuity to all his friends that gave me tea, maybe  something I said or did upset him. I have no idea what happened. All I knew, he  turned into an impatient and angry person, going down down the stairs in a rush, pulling the donkey ( and me).The first incident (yes, first) was when we were going down the  stairs and he was running like a madman, disregarding the people coming in the opposite direction. The problem was I was on the donkey, but I had no control over it. And my knee was bumping into stones, trees, walls, and much worse - people.
I was getting worried. Before I could think it was my imagination, the Bedouin led the donkey so near  the people who were caming up the stairs, my knee hit the chest of an old  man who lost balance and fell. Luckily he landed on the top step, and did not roll down the stone steps.I was livid. I was afraid. The Bedouin approached the man,, tried to talk to the tourists who accompanied the old man, and then came back complaining it was all the old man's fault, as he had warned him to wait for the donkey to go by, but he did not listen.
HmmmShortly after, he began to get restless again. I did not understand what was happening, or what was distressing him. But this time things were more complicated for me. I fell off the horse's back.Literally. On a  steeper curve Monica ( the donkey) stepped sideways, lost balance and off I went to the ground. I got my foot tangled in the stirrup and I was afraid of being pulled by a scared donkey leb by a crazy  Bedouin.Thank God nothing worse happened. The Bedouin was extremely disconcerted, he even seemed worried. Some bedouin women came running up to me, offered me water, said their hearts skipped a beat.Imagine how I felt.I decided to walk, at least for a little while, to calm down, and make a proper decision. I was pissed off, I was angry, but I also knewthere was still a long way to go, it was darn hot and I hate exercising.

The Bedouin rushed in front of me and he was gone.
I asked a colleague of his to call him back, so I could to pay for the tour. I had a very good tour until we started our way back, he had to get paid for his good work. I would pay him what we agreed, but no tip.

He did not look at the money I was giving him. He vehemently refused.- I have not finished the tour. I promised I would take you back to the Treasury.I told him I was not going to get on the donkey. He agreed and walked besides me. He looked calmer. We walked a bit more and I felt I could get back to the donkey. We covered another good part of the return path. Gorgeous landscapes,  sensational views ...Then he suggested we visited the Spring water. I agreed, thinking it was just another tourist attraction in Petra. The Bedouin then took a narrow path that was totally empty. No tourists nor Arabs, no Bedouins, or anyone. I was a little apprehensive. Then he said I would be able to undress and swim, if I wanted. I was nervous, almost histerical, but I had to think. I remembered him saying that many foreign women go to Jordan, in one day fall in love with a Bedouin man and move to the Bedouin camp. My spine chilled. The boy was not even 20 years old.I could not believe he wanted to "date"me. i could not be possible. I could easily be his mother.

As my mind tried to process what was happening, the Bedouin took the donkey close to some rocks and went on it. WENT ON THE DONKEY. WITH ME! My anxiety and my fear increased greatly. I wanted to go away running and screaming hysterically, but run where? Running for whom?I asked to go back. I said I did not want to see the spring water, I was tired and afraid of falling again, because the terrain was very rocky. The Bedouin became angry. He began to gesticulate and shout, complaining  I said I would go with him to the spring water. That in his  culture  it was an offense to change one's mind. He said  I did not trust him. He was furious. And the more he talked, the angrier he grew. I was terrified. Then, out of the blue, as if by divine interference, a lost couple showed up. They stopped the Bedouin to ask for information (the boy jumped off the donkey as quickly as he could,  as if he could not be seen on it with me). I took advantage of the distraction  and jumped off the donkey too.
I paid him, he 'did not want to receive the money, but this time I was not open for negotiation. There would be no more talking.
I asked the couple if I could walk with them. The Bedouin could not do anything, about it, he could not stop me, so he started beating up the poor donkey, furious. My heart sank, but I did not say anything. The couple agreed to let me tag along, but they did not seem very interested in me. There was no chit chat, no conversation. they were probably afraid I was part of some sort of scam.

The Bedouin went away and came back where I was several times. And each time he came near me, he said things that I did not understand. Angry. Screaming.I had already paid for the ride and the tour, I do not know what else he could want. I simply did not engage. I was afraid.Shortly after we reached the tourist path, the couple decided to visit some ruins I did not want to see. Actually, I did not want to see anything else. All I wanted to do was leave, disappear.I saw another couple and asked them the same favor. Could I please tag along? They were French.
It was my salvation, because the Bedouin lost it, he came my way, screaming and yelling. The Frenchman stood in front of me and said that the conversation was over. The Bedouin protested, but he was powerless to do anything but try to intimidate me. My French saviour could not care less, he simply defended me and protected me all the way to the Treasury. He did not even know my version of the history, he said if I did not want to talk to the guy, that was enough to him. The French couple escorted me up to the Treasury, then we realized  a group of Bedouin boys were following us. They were about 4 kids. The French guy would say: let's stop two seconds here. We stopped the beduins  passed by us, sat on the next available rock and stayed there. We'd pass by them, they would get up and continue to follow us. This happened over and over again, but by then I was no longer afraid.Because the boys did not seem to give up,  the French couple decided to take me up  all the way to the gate.
The kids continued following us. The couple decided to take me  all the way up to the reception of my hotel where they thought I was safe.
I went to my bedroom tired, but extremely grateful for the company, the protection and affection.Do you believe the crazy Bedouin found my friends, and Renata and Monica and went talking to them? He complained I did not go with him to the Spring water,Rant, he said he was not old enough to be my son, that he was ALREADY 19 years old ... he was angry, And trying to advocate his case to my girlfriends. In the end, he gave his card to them and asked them to give it to me. Did he really expected me to call?

Inspiracao Musical / Musical inspiration

- Inaieeeee vais e fudeeeeee!
E tocou pra escola toda ouvir.

I just remembered a situation, back when I was a teenager. I has a boyfriend who was the vocalist of a band, and this group was quite known in our home town.
When we broke up, he wrote a lyric that said"

Fuck you Inaieeee

And he played to the whole school to hear.
In portuguese it rhymes. It sounded quite musical...

Do you remember when I shared my despair because my older child decided to dye her hair? can't remember? Check here
The time for redemption finally arrived.
Anita's roots were growing for a while and she was always complaining she looked like a zebra, with her bi color hair.
I waited as long as I could, savoured the victory ( although I held my tong not to yell I TOLD YOU SO! I TOLD YOU SO! ok, maybe I did tell her that, I can't really recall.)
When I thought she suffered enough  learned her lesson, and would listen to me hahaha, silly, stupid me, I decided to take her to a hairdresser I trust to undo the damage.

They don't really speak English, but they are very, very good at what they do when they understand what you want.
The owner of the salon comes around and takes charge of the situation.

- We need to get her hair back to it's natural color.
- Like this? ( and she would point at the hair)
- No. We make this part ( pointing at the blond hair) like this ( pointing at natural hair)
- So I make all same?
- Yes, you make all same. Dark. like roots.

And off I went to get my henna done. Next i hear :

- Mum, I think they are coloring the roots - making it blond.

I look, and sure enough they are coloring the roots!
I run towards the three hairdressers and try to explain they are doing it all wrong.
They call the owner who says to me:

- I ask, you say yes.
- I meant all dark. Like this ( and show the roots)
- Ah. No problem. but you said like this.

I agree to disagree and go back to my henna treatment.
Anita has her hair colored, washed and they are drying it when she calles me back:

- Mum!! Look at this.

I look and can't decide if I am going to laugh or cry. Anita's hair is a beautiful color. looks totally natural - but the roots are bright blond. Like we asked them to invert the colors...
Here comes the owner again. She does not even say anything in English. She takes Anita to have her hair washed, yells at the hair dressers and gets more color into Anita's hair.
By then I was expecting it all to fall off. seriously. But instead, Anita leaves several minutes later with a gorgeous, silky looking hair, exactly the color of her own hair.

Phew! Mission accomplished. Anita looks beautiful again...

A historia ta aqui.

- Pintar. Uma cor so.
- Essa cor?
- Nao.

Eu fui fazer a minha henna.
Um pouco depois a Anita grita:

- Mae, acho que elas estao pintando a minha raiz.

Corro la, e batata! Gesticulo, pulo, esperneio.
La volta a dona do salao. Explico de novo.

- Eu pergunto. Voce fala errado.

Cabelo tingido, lavado, quando vao secar, ouco a Anita edsesperada:

- Maaaaeeeee...

O cabelo dela esta parecendo uma zebra. Mas uma zebra invertida. A raiz loira e o resto do cabelo da cor natural. Gelo.
la vem a dona do salao.

Ufa! Missao cumprida. E comprida.

Quando vi a propaganda desse show, fiquei alucinada. E ia ser meu primeiro show Koreano.
, nos sentamos e ficamos esperando o show.
E o show comecou.
E achei feio.
E as roupas eram sem graca. As coreografias desconexas.
Lili narrava o show pra mim. E ele se arrasta no palco. Devagar, bem devagar. E ele continua se arrastando no palco. Morreu.
- Precisa esperar o show acabar.
- Nao quero. Quero ir embora.
- Nao pode. tem que esperar acabar.
-Mas vc nao pode me prender aqui.
- nao. Nao posso.
-Entao abre.
- So quando acabar...
Sai.
Nunca rimos tanto!

******************************************

When I saw the advertisement for this show, I could barely hold the excitment. It all seemed  so colorful, so dynamic, I was dying to go! And it would also be my first  Korean show.Lia was generous enough to agree to go with me.I was so enthusiastic about it, we got there more than 45 minutes early. It was cold as hell, so I made sure to take a blanket (because I'm chic) to wrap myself in.I don't care if you think I am old or have no aesthetic sense. I refuse to be cold.Lia was horrified about it, but I took one for her too. I did not want my daughter to be cold either. It was easy to park (we arrived too early, remember?), And we took our seats and waited for the show. The place was relatively full -  who would not want to see this amazing display of colors and talent? And the show began. Or I thought it started, because it was so slow I was not really sure. The movements were uncoordinated, without grace, and if the show had a story (and I did google it and found out they HAD  a story), I did not understand a thing.
The performance was dreadful. Ugly. The clothes had no glamour at all. The choreography seemed disconnected. It was horrible. A total disaster. The only good thing there was Lia's company  - and the blankets, because it was darn cold.Lili narrated the show for me. He drags himself onstage. Slowly, very slowly. He keeps dragging himself all over the stage. He died. And they are dragging him after death ... and painfully we watched. When neither of us could take it any longer, we decided to leave.
We got up and  left quietly, being careful not to disturb some crazy person who might be enjoying it. Off to the door we went. To my surprise, it was locked.I asked the security guard to open it.- You need  to wait for the show to end. - I do not want to do that. I want to leave now.- You can not. You will have to wait.- You can not hold me here.- No. I can not.- So open it.- Only when it ends ...When I was getting ready to trow a tantrun, an Arab woman said something to the guard (in Arabic) and he opened the door for her to pass. I had no doubts. I stuck my foot in the opening, threw my weight against the door and started screaming so hard he decided to let me out.
But they closed the door with Lia still inside. As the apple does not fall far from the tree, she started banging on the door, threw herself against the security guards and also managed to get out. When I saw her coming out, I screamed:- Run Lia! Run or they will take us back and make us watch the whole show!
We never laughed so much in our lives.
