Coisas de ontem / Yesterday's stuff

Naquele tempo...
Back then...

Eu era baderneira, namoradeira, me achava a mais  "dexcolada" do mundo. Eu me sentava na calçada e chorava.

Amo MUITO!

Outro dia
Just another day

When I was 16, I moved from a coastal city in Brazil to a small country site - and I hated it with passion.
I hated it. I hated to leave my friends, to lose my connections and to change my life style. I thought I was cool and "in" and out of the blue, I was in the middle of nowhere, in a class of seniors who always went to school together.
I was an outsider all right. I did not feel I fit in at all. Everyone there knew each other since birth, the families were friends...and there was me.
They were so different.I was so different.
They went to mass. I had a different boyfriend each week.
To top things up, I had to travel 3 hours a day to go to school and back. And the inter municipal bus broke more often than not.
My days hanging with surfers and hand gliders were over. And I cried. I sat on the footpath and cried my eyes out.
Everyone was so well behaved - and I thought it was boring as hell. So I cried some more.
I was a troublemaker , a flirt. I enjoyed being different. And I felt like an extra terrestrial.
But why am I telling you all this?
Because a message on my last post made me cry. It said: I love you too. Since 88. - Ro.

What happened was a total transformation. No one else changed, but I did. In the last couple months of the semester, I found out how sweet and amazing that group was. How tolerant ( not you, Adib! - yes, I can hold a grudge)  and fun they were.
Instead of keeping me away for all the differences, they just laughed and said:

- You are unique!

And then I felt welcome and loved by those people. And now, 20 odd years later are still part of my life.
People I love dearly.

After reading that message, I realized that Inaie is back. I feel cheated to leave the life I loved and enjoyed, and I refused to give USA a fair shot. I got here hating everything and everyone.
I recognize the behavior of that little girl, who struggled against the tide , who refused to accept her new reality,
But your comment helped me see things with different eyes , Ro ! And I hope to findmany Rogérios , Luis Renatos , Gustavos , Giulianos , Jeans , Andrés, Valérias,  Xuxas , Andreias and Lucianas . And hope they become as special in my life , as you all are to me. Even you, Adib!

Lots of love!

Gemeas / Twins

+++++++

Remember those girls I always mention? One is 17 and the other one is 15. Another day, they decided to go to the movies and only when they got there, they realized the movie was rated 17 and up.
The older kid did not even blink:
- hi! My sister and I are twins - but she forgot her ID. You can check mine though...
- Sorry, I need to call the manager.
The manager comes, look at them and says:
- It is pretty obvious you are twins...please come in!

TATTOO

** Bah, será que isso é hereditário?

++++++

Random mum daughter conversation in a tattoo parlor:
- Darling, get a tattoo with some color!
- No. I want it black.
- But with color it will look so much better...
- Nope. I really want it black.
- But...
- Mum, I don't want it. I Want a phoenix, not a peacock!!!

At this point the tattoo lady interrupts us them and say:

- Who would like a peacock tattooed on their body, right?

And they did not even need to look to know she had the most enormous peacock tattooed all over her arm...
A pretty peacock, I must say!

tal mãe, tal filhas... like mum like daughters

- O GOXTOSA!!
Nada disso. As cantadas eram sutis e engraçadas.

++++++++

I remember travelling from Camberra to Sydney to go to the Mardi Grass in Australia. It is one of the biggest gay parades - and I just had to go!
I went alone and remember how safe I felt. I was mesmerized by all the worlds mixed in that street. People from all walks of life, that shared only one ideal - EQUALITY.
The year was 2000 and the mote was " legalize gay adoption". I went out on the streets, campaigned, took lots and lots of pictures and was flattered by some women who flirted with me.
Nothing like what we experience sometimes when men are flirting. No aggressive pun lines, no disrespectful comments about my boobs or bum. All quite light and elegant - I dare say.
Today both my girls went to the gay parade here in Phoenix, and I could not remember my own experience when they both came back with stories of fun, interesting jokes in a very safe environment.
The only difference was they were both approached by heterosexual guys too...

Mais adolescentes/ More teens

Conversa numa casa qualquer
- Filha, acho melhor vc parar de nadar nua.
- Por que?
- Por que o vizinho pode ver.
- E?
- E ele pode ser um tarado.
- E?
- E ele pode tirar fotos suas.
- E?
- E?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A chat in a random house:
Mum says to her teen daughter:
- I think you should stop swimming naked.
- Why?
- Because the neighbor may see you.
- So?
- He may be a pervert
- So?
- He may take pics of you
- So?
The poor mother, running out of arguments, tries her last line:
- He may publish it on the internet
- Oh! That would be pathetic. With so many gorgeous pics online, who would be interested in pictures of people swimming? No one should care about mine.
The mother sights in disbelief , her sister says:
- No one knows who am I and who are you. they may think it is ME!
- So?

Teen / adolescente

Pic stolen from the net to prove my kid is no exception...

I get into my daughter's room and it is total chaos.
- Tide your room
- NO!
- You have to... it seems like a hurricane just passed by
- Mum, this is a representation of my life. I am just being poetic

Then I try my other kid:
- Tide your room please
- What? I am 17 years old. I don't need anyone to tell me to fix my room.
I look at her, look at her room and know I raised them very poorly...

Adolescencia / teens

My daughter comes home from school all embarrassed today.
- Mum, you won't believe what i have done!
and she continues, on the same breath...
- I was texting a friend from Bahrain in class ( ??) and told her how cute is this guy in my class. Then I decided to take a pic and send her, so she could see it for herself. We all know I am a bit clumsy, so I checked if the sound was off on my mobile, then I put on the earphone, to make sure i would not make a fool of myself in front of everyone. Then I got him in a close and click! the flas was on. The flash was ON, mum!
I am sooo embarrassed!

And all I could think about was: texting un class? Shouldn t you be learning something instead? Is it even allowed  Where was the darn teacher?
I guess I totally missed the point here...

can't pay - can't play

+++

One of the things that has caused me the biggest surprise in the United States has been the glaring social difference between children who attend the school where the girls go, and their previous schools.
Of course there would be no comparison between the private British school  where they were enrolled in Bahrain and a public school in the USA.
We already expected a difference, but it breaks my heart to know that even in a middle-class neighborhood like ours (the average salary in Gilbert is $ 100,000 / year - more than double of Arizona's average, which is $ 41,000) many children do not have access to basic things like being able to play sports in school.
No! I'm not kidding.
Here, if you can not afford the costs involved ($ 25 Medical exam / $ 100 per season), if you do not have medical insurance (did you know that in the USA medical care is through insurance? There is no such thing as public health here ), you do not play.
The thing is so serious that we are having trouble getting Lia to try out for the volleyball team, because the insurance is taking it's sweet time to send us a confirmation of her policy.
And without insurance, there is no agreement.
Today I went to talk to the athletic director of the college, who has agreed to let Lia try out after the normal dates, when her insurance card is ready.
The thing seems common here, my girls say it is not uncommon to hear colleagues saying ... "if you can not pay / you can not play"
I wish I had enough money to subsidize this kids who want to play, and can not do it for financial reasons.
Now tell me: did you know USA was like that? Am i missing something here?

How can they call this country the "Land of opportunities" if they don't give opportunities to their own kids?

E ela cresceu... and she grew up!

Anita woke up super early and called me to take her to do her written test at the traffic department.
Different from yesterday, everything run smoothly today and in less than an hour we were all done.
And she passed with flying colours - only got ONE answer wrong, and only because next to her, was an illiterate person, doing a verbal test - in Spanish!
In the evening, we went out for pizza to celebrate her permit!
From now on, she can drive a car anywhere, any time, as long as she has a fully licensed adult next to her.
After dinner, we let her drive Fabio's car. She has a long way to go, until she can actually confidently drive, but i was impressed how careful and attentive she was during the drive.
The problem now is to admit she is a big girl now. She is conquering the world - one day at the time.

Not sure i am happy with it.
Can I forbid her to grow up?

A chegada / arrivals

E aí vc me pergunta:

Believe me or not, Anita came from Brazil with a backpack full of bottled liquids. It went through Brazilian customs okay but when it got to Miami, it was stopped. Obviously.
The solution they found was to send the backpack as cargo, with the shampoos, perfumes, and her mac book.
When she called me from the airport to tell me the mac book was travelling in a backpack, in-properly packed, my heart skipped a beat.
The night before, I spent hours watching a program about a gang operating in USA stealing electronics from luggage in American airports. Even if it survived the gang, it could easily break being mishandled in transit.
I was good, I did not even say anything. But man, I though ugly things galore.
When the girsl arrived, the Mac was in perfect condition, but Anita lost her wallet and 500 dollars my mother gave her.
Lia was back inside the transit area, looking for the wallet.
You must be asking why Anita did not go search for her own wallet and money, right?
She could not. She lost her passport in Miami and was not allowed back inside.

Can someone please tell me teenager years pass??
Please?

Cadeia no safado!
+++++++++++++++

My oldest daughter is 16 years old. And so far she only dated boys her own age  as far as  I know.
One day we were talking about dating / age appropriate / social conventions ... and she asked me what I would do if she got a much older boyfriend.
I had no doubt and the answer came naturally:
- I would call the cops and charge him with pedophilia. Lock up the bastard!
Then I remembered when I was 17, and came home, with a guy 10 years older than me.
My father was livid. When I insisted that they got to know each other better, my father said there was no need for it,  they had played soccer at school,  when they were younger.
I laughed.
Looking back, I can only imagine the fear / anxiety / panic my parents fell at that time.
As life is often generous, my flirt did not last long  and my parents were able to resume life in peace.
Now it's my turn to spend sleepless nights.
Where did my daughter get that question from?
Why was she so interested in knowing what would be my reaction "if" she chose an older boyfriend?
Hang on I'll take my gun and I'll be back soon ...

seu filho é gordo! / your kid is fat!

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Many mums are afraid they kid will be fat, and they struggle trying ti walk the fine line between having a well fed kid or a overweight child.
Yolhi, my friend, is one of these mothers.
Our families are very close, we love each other dearly.
One day Anita says:
- Yolhi, when Giancarlo starts school, can you enrol him in my school?
- Sure!
but Anita ahd more to say...
- So when the other kids bully him because he is fat, I can defend him.
- Do you thing he is chubby?
- he is fat
To be honest, the kid is not fat at all. this is Anita's imagination getting the best of her. I decided not to say anything.
- Maybe you think he is fat because you always see him in nappies, Anita - said Yolhi hopeful
- No. I saw him naked many times. He is chubby!

And my friend was devastated when she went home

Adolescente/ teen

My daughter:
- I say i do not like people, but deep, deep down... I really don't like them!

I just smile and pray for teen years go faster than normal years

Namorado Indesejado / Unwanted boyfriend

My daughter decided to date a good for nothing boy who smokes, therefore he stinks nicotine.
To make sure I disapprove the habit, I decided to spray him with air freshner when he came to the house.

PS - My kid did not find it funny at all, but I can't stop laughing every time I remember it...

PS2 - Are you participation on this blog's give away? If you are not, just go there now!

A nossa Lojinha / Our cold store

Devo estar completamente enganada!!

Every time something runs out in this house, I check Anita's personal stock. She has the habit of collecting all sorts of crap things.
Today i went to her bathroom looking for a bottle of shampoo and found no less tha TEN containers.
And here I was, thinking she only had one head...

Você fica brava? Do you get mad?

++++++++++++++++++

I love the teenager kids of one of my friends, and it seems they like me too. On Xmas Eve the older one asked:
- Do you get mad at your kids?
- Yep! I yell, scream, slap them, trow public tantruns...
- No, seriously!
- I swear! I have even yelled at some of their friends in several ocasions...

And just like that my fa club was dissolved!

sexta-feira, abril 1

To be a white woman living in the Middle East can be challenging at times.

We arrived home around 7 pm. At 8:30 both my kids were ready to enjoy their social lives and were dying to get out, see their friends and have fun. Who can blame them? I would be doing the same if I were their age, and had their energy...

Anita went to a friend's house, not too far. Lia decided her trip HAD to be longer, and she crossed the country ( about 30 min) to meet her friends.

Our watchman is a wonderful guy and he is often driving our kids. It costs more or less the same as a taxi would, he drives my car ( which is safer) and we know he is a good, careful driver. And he is reliable.

We called him, and made all arrangements. He would drop them both off, then pick up Lia. Anita would come home with another driver, because she was near by. Both girls would be home by 11pm.

Anita called and negotiated a later curfew, got hers extended to 11:30pm.

At 11:45 none of them were home and I was getting grumpy. I called Anita whoa ssured me her taxi was late, but she was coming home soon. Lia did not have her phone on her - her sim card was under her dad's care ( God knows where).

10 more minutes and the phone rings. Our watchman sounded stressed:

- Boss, problem. Accident. You need come here.
- Is everything OK? Is anyone hurt?
- Problem. Mina Salman traffic lights. Come now.

Fabio jumps off the bed and starts getting ready. i decide to go wearing my giraffe pijamas. There is no time to change.

- Inaie, you better change. We may have to talk to the police.Amram does not want to give me details, he is not talking about injuries...

I put some clothes on and run for the car. On my way down I have an idea:

- Amram. Inaie here.Put Lia on the phone.
- Lia not here
my heart sinks...
- Lia not pick up yet.
my heart sings...

Amram is talking, Lia was not there at the time of the accident. We only need to find out if there were other people involved and if someone is hurt.

Fabio drove at 100 km/h. Cars were overtaking us fast and furious from right and left. If we were above speed limit, how fast were those cars going?

When we got there, we saw 4 police cars with lights on, and my car - on the middle of the road. No other cars. Amram standing ( Thank God) with the police.

- Hello! That's my car. What happened? What is happening?

No one replied, no one talked to me, until two men weaing thobes ( arabs probably) came around and told me they were witnesses and a drunk gentleman run in front of the car, not giving time for Amram to stop or avoid the hit.

I was terrified to learn there was no other car. A pedestrian had hit my car - and the damage was quite extensive to the vehicle (i could only think what had happened to the man).

I tried to talk to the police a couple of times, but they just ignored me. At some point they asked Amram to come and get the insurance card from me and that was about all the interaction that took place with us.

We stayed there, standing on the side of the road, watching the police take measurements, pictures and do their jobs. Then they told Amram he had to take the car to the police station.

The man just had an accident - I wanted to drive the car, to spare him from the stress, but when we tried to join him, the police just said:

- I already told you you do not need anyone with you. send them home. you come alone...

Fabio and I were told to leave the scene, go home and that was all what it was to it.

I tried to ask questions, no one bothered to reply. They only told me my car would be there for a couple of days. They would call me if they needed anything. I tried to figure out what was going to happen with Amram, no one replied.

In the car, fabio and I were as silent as one can be.

Things were rushing in my head. Amram has a new born baby. What happened to the pedestrian? What will happen to Amram? What can we do? Who can we call? Do we know any lawyers? Is he going to be in jail? What now? What now?

I got home, went straight to Amram's home. His wife does not speak English. She openned the door and said:

- Amram?

I tried to explain, she broke into tears. When I looked inside the small room, her gorgeous baby was fast asleep, looking like an angel. My heat sunk.

I called Amram and asked him to talk to her. I offered to help, to stay with her, to do whatever was necessary. They did not say what I could do to make things better, i could not think about anything. It was 1 am.

I went home. Fabio was talking to our landlord ( Amram's formal boss and his sponsor in the country), to Amram, to the landlord again. After a while it became clear that it would be better if Fabio and the landlord went to the police station.

I offered to go. The car is under my name. Both men decided I could not help and it was better to stay home. Woman, white, Middle East? I am nothing. I can do nothing.

The landlord was worried Amram would spend the night in jail, and being Thursday, the chances of releasing him on Friday would also be very slim. he would probably be there for a couple of nights.

His wife alone with a new born.Life upside down.Too many doubts. Too much fear...

Thank God the pedestrian was not in intensive care - Amram did not have a drop of alcohol in his system and he had witnesses. Fabio and our landlord brough him home.

He is now with his family. His wife is probably feeling much better. Lia came home with a friend and I am grateful Fabio took care of everything. All in all, it could have been much, much worse.
