trocar pneu

- Pai, me ensina  a trocar pneu?
- Vai ali do lado do carro.
Obedeci meio desconfiada.
Pronto! Já ensinei.

+++++

- Dad, can you teach me how to change a tire?
- Go there, stand next to the car
I did go, expecting something terrible to happen
- Now someone will see you, feel sorry for you and change this crap. Done. Now you know!

When i was a teenager, my neighbor wanted to make some extra cash and wrote a hand made advesrtisement that she placed on her front door
The equivalent in English would read:

ENGLISH CLASSES
HAIRDESSER

I still giggle when I remember, and when I meet her, I make my best efforts not to say anything about it. And that was over 25 years ago...

A vida ás vezes é uma merda! Life sucks sometimes!

I was five when we first met. We were neighbours. My mom worked and her mother took care of me before and after school every day. Her sister was my "bestie"
Maribel, was our archi enemy. A few years older, she was too cool to hang with us or to have us around.
And we fought with her as much as we could ( not that she cared at all, but we still did!)

Maribel cresceu e continuou sendo "cool". Estudou, arrumou um emprego legal, foi viajar. Fez amigos, teve namorados, inventou moda.
Maribel pintou e bordou.

Maribel grew up and took life as it presented itself. She studied, found herself a nice job, she had boyfriends galore. She travelled, she partied.

Maribel teve outros namorados, teve outros empregos, fez outras viagens.
A maioria deles nada animadora.

And along came Julia. The best thing Maribel ever did. But she did not like to be like everyone else. She decided not to marry Julia's dad and they shared sustody of the kid and raised a fine young lady. She is now 12, and has the world at her feet.
One day, Maribel found out she had a heart condition.Few days later they booked a surgery to get her a by pass. She was 44 when she got into that room.
She was in ICU for 28 days. Two medical reports a day, every day.
The news were not very encouraging, but they said mainly the same: she is stable. And we waited.
After 28 days her heart gave up. She left us broken hearted.
The mayans were right; her world ended!

And now she is there, on God's arm, just like she is in this picture.
rest in peace my dear friend!

Diferenças culturais/ Cultural differences

Foto daqui

Yesterday, reading my post, my mother recalled a story that happened in Dubai.
A friend invited us for lunch at her house and said:
My children are Emirati, they eat with their hands. Warn the girls so they do not get startled.
Anita was 7 , Lia 6.During our drive to my friend's house, I tried to prepare them:
- They are Arabs. They eat with their hands. Do not stare. Make no comment ...
We got there, the food was served, we all sat around the table. The eldest son, as he promised began to eat with his hands (he had told his mother -  this it is my house, I always eat with my hands, I will not use cutelery to please any guest).
And Anita, CONTRARY to what  SHE had promised, widened her two gorgeous blue eyes and looked mesmerized, staring at the boy. She did not even blink.
I wanted to die of embarassment. Quietly, I took her to another room where no one could hear us:
- Anita! Why are you doing this? Didn't you know he was going to eat with his hands? I asked you not to stare!
- But mom, I thought he would eat chips with his hands ... but he eats EVERYTHING with his hands, even rice ...

It was too much for her, poor thing!

Bullying - Santos

As surfistinhas me olhavam de cima abaixo e eu me recusava a mudar o meu jeito, minhas roupas ou qualquer coisa.
- Normal? Normal?
A nota máxima é 10.

**************************************

Every time I moved towns, the same story repeated itself. The bullying, the nasty jokes about my name, my small town accent, the way I walked - and in Santos, the bullies fav target was my taste of clothes.
They spared no energy in trying to make me feel bad, in ridiculing me and my style.
Of course it made me sad. I was thirteen, I was in eighth grade.
Lucky for me, boys were not bothered to pick on me, and I had enough male fans to keep my head above the water.
Despise how I felt, I never changed to get anyone's approval. I was not prepared to let others dictate who I would be, or what I would do.
Head strong or not, I wanted to fit in, I wish I was like everyone else.
It was around that time that I met Fabiana, who is my good friend until this day. She was quite funky, in her alternative way.

She had a crush on a friend of mine. Trying to play matchmaker, I run to talk to him and feel the water for her. I came back with the best news I could imagine:

 - He thinks you're a normal girl! I said radiant

Fabiana glared at me.

- Normal? Normal? Who wants to be normal? How very mediocre.

The crush died imediately. She could not imagine someone calling her "normal"...

And at 13, I also realized there is no glamour in being "normal", in fitting in.

I decided my own opinion is worth 8 points. The maximum score is 10. All others added, makes for 20% of the total possible marks. I also learned 8 is more than enough...

Só se fala de bullying por aqui? Is this a bullying blog?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You must think I have some kind of  complex, that I think  everyone picks on me. I can assure you, this is NOT true at all. Reading Mr Lemos blog ( sorry, Portuguese only), I got the inspiration to write about the bullying experiences i have, so I sat down and wrote eight posts. In a row.
This is another story abou my teen years and how I dealt with bullying.
We moved cities every two years and every time I came to a different school, a new town, was the same story. The kids who grew up in the same community, made fun of me.It was only natural, I guess.
In this story I was 13 years old. There was a boy who really enjoyed annoying me. Every day he had something stupid to tell me.
One day he came up with a new technique:

- Psiu, psiu ...
I would look and he would say:
- Fuck off

- Inaie, Inaie
I would look and he would say:
- Fuck off

He thought it was really funny. He would call, I would look  (why the hell did I look?) And he would say the same thing time and time again. Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck you.

I never took my issues to other people to solve, so one day i got tired of it, stood up, got the chair I was sitting on as smashed it on him. Simple as that.

Next day MY mum was in the school grounds, demanding the school did something to the boy. In her reasoning, he would try to take revenge, and being a boy, he could hurt me, so the school had to take imediate action.

Being fair, he never tried anything else and he stopped calling me names. i don't even remember him calling other girls any names. that was probably the end of his bullying career ( and my chair smashing career too, I have never repeated the performance).

I know he is now a policeman.

Mais Bullying ?? More Bullying ??

A cidade grande a engolira.

Somos apenas TODOS diferentes!

PS Tá explicada agora a minha cara de má??

*****************************

I was 14 years old, living  in Taubaté , a small city in Brazil and I was part of the unpopular group of kids at school. The "cool kids" would not give us the time of the day. And unfortunately for me, they also found me different, so they made fun of me by the bucket full.
They called me "pinoe" "yo yo cream" all sorts of names, as these kids had a huge fascination for my name and found endless ways to piss me off because of it.
At that time someone decided I walked like a giraffe (I did not want to have tired, curved shoulders, so I threw them back as much as I could. I give them that, it was probably a bit weird) ...
So the kids called me giraffe!
I was sad, of course, but pretended not to care. I put on this intellectual persona and pretended to be better than anyone else. I just acted like I was far superior, and nothing they did could affect me.

What I really wanted, like every 14 year old kid, was to be accepted, to be respected. That would not happen any time soon, so I just continued playing my part.
Time passed, I went to university in Campinas. There, I met many people who studied with me in other places.
One day I was with a bunch of  peoplewhen I saw one of the girls who used to make fun of me  at school in Taubaté.

She was alone, she seemed lost.I went to talk to her. She seemed not to believe it was me, there with the  "cool people".
The large city swallowed her. There, in the middle of a million strangers she felt scared and small.
I was sorry  for her, so I introduced her to my friends, hoping she could findherself some space to shine in the new environment. I did not want her to feel lost because she was in a new and unfamiliar place, like I felt so many times.

Just now I remembered people sometimes say I think I am better than others.Today, writing this post, I figured out I may look that way because I had to create this new persona to protect myself from bullies, from verbal attacks and from being hurt. I do not think better than anyone, but I know very well that I'm not worse than anyone either. We're just ALL different!

A testa abriu.
Minha mãe abre a porta, meu estomago gela.

******************************

I lived in a compound, one with many, many children. Everybody loved playing in the street. Playing in the street was still allowed back then. Firstly because it was not quite a normal street,  it was inside the compound, only residents had access and there were security guards everywhere.
One night I went out to play, I was about 9 years old, my hair was very long, reaching the middle of my back. I never  combed my hair and I still don't . To be honest, I don't owe a comb or a brush. I swear. I always washed my hair, passed my fingers through it, and I was done. And that day when I got closer to the other kids, the started calling me "the seven seas witch". I asked the to stop, they did not. Seven seas witch! Seven seas witch! Seven seas witch!  My blood waswarming up. Seven Seas witch!!  Seven Seas...I do not remember having anything planned, but I still remember the scene in slow motion. One of the boys came out from behind the car where they were all hiding and I trew a stone on his direction. It landed on his forehead. The forehead opened. There was blood everywhere.I run home and pretended nothing happened. I was scared. My mother must found it strange the fact I was home so early, but she did not ask, I did not tell. Two hours later, our doorbell rings, it was the boy's parents. They had just arrived from the hospital. The boy had a few stitches in his forehead.
My mother opened the door, my stomach froze. I heard Alessandro's mother (this was his name) asking if they could please talk to me.I went to the living room, what alternative did I have, anyway? The boy trembling, says:- Inaie, I am sorry. I should not have called you the Seven Seas Witch. My mother looks at me incredulously, but before any of us had the time to say anything,  the family marched back to their house, leaving me speechless.I do not remember the rest of the story. I do not remember being grounded,  having suffered any consequences for my actions, I think that was the end of the story, really, but I can say  those two hours were the most terrifying of my childhood. I knew that bell would ring sooner or later ...
Alessandro  sadly passed away in a car accident when he was 17 years old. At the time of his death, were good friends. He turned out to be a fine guy ( maybe the stone helped?) I do not remember ever apologising for hitting him, but if you're listening, Ale, I apologize now.
I just wanted to scare you guys, make you stop. I never imagined I would be so good at it ...

Bullying e vingança / Bullying and revenge

Eu tinha 9, eles tinham 13, 14...
E me zoavam. muito.
E tenta me passar uma cantada.

- Hey!! Nós já nos conhecemos!! Eu me lembro!!

- Nope. Continuo igualzinha, só um pouco mais velha!
- Você ficou linda!
( e que me perdoem os que me acharem convencida, folgada e egocêntrica, mas a resposta eu dei de boca cheia e me senti de alma lavada.)
- Você está enganado. Eu sempre fui bonita. Vocês é que eram selvagens demais prá perceber...

Ser evoluído não é prá qualquer um. Eu reprovei nessa matéria! Mas passei nas aulinhas de inglês.

***************************************

I was 9 years old at the most. My mother always made me go to English classes, even if it meant a two hour journey in a bus. Alone. And there I was going twice a week, Aguas de Lindóia to Serra Negra, to learn some English. And my classmates were all dumber older. I was 9, they were 13, 14 years old ...And they made fun of me. All the time. Made fun of everything I did or said,  they made fun of my name,  laughed at the fact that I was in another city, teased me for knowing more than they did ( ???).Everyday after class, on my way to the bus stop, a group of idiots came following me and messing with me.I was sad. I hated to go to Serra Negra, hated learning English and was always thinking of ways to escape from that torture. But I never told anyone. I was terrified of my mum going to the school, talking to the kids, calling their parents. the mess and the embarassment would be too big for me to handle.
Many  years passed. One day, I was once again on that same bus that took me from Aguas de Lindóia to Serra Negra, but this time I was on my way home from university. I was 17 years old, I had changed a great deal since I was 9.
As luck would have it, one of the bullies from the past sits right next to me in the bus.The first thing he tries to do is chat, he is obviously trying to impress me.
Our age gap is not so big, I look at him and I see a sad young man. Nothing special, no light in his eyes.
At that moment, I had two options: I could be an enlightened being, or return to the cave era and be a savage.I gave him lots of attention. I let him think he was  handsome. I talked to him, faked interest (he seemed surprised, I don't think he was very popular with girls), I knew he would get out of the bus on the next town. Shortly before reaching the bus station, I pretended I realized something really important:
- Hey! We've met before! I remember!
- It is not possible, I would not forget ...
- We met ! We had  English classes together.
- No! I still keep in touch with the people I studied English with...
- So you remember me-I am Inaie.

In a second, I saw the scenes of abuse flash before his eyes. he was embarrassed, he looked down, I think he wanted to disappear ...

- But you, you ... you look different ...
- Nope. I look exactly the same, just a little older!
- You look beautiful!(And forgive me if you think I am full of myself, but the answer I gave him helped heal my soul)
- You are mistaken. I've always been pretty. But you were all too stupid and shallow to look at me properly ...

Foi Bullying? Was it bullying?

Ás vezes eu acertava, as vezes eu errava.

- Eles me xingam e eu corro atrás deles e bato neles, quando eu consigo alcançar.

Ela espera o horário da novela e me mostra a Bruna.

Quase desmaio. Ela é L I N D A!!

I remember being a little girl, about seven years old and having some boys annoying me in the school playground during our breaks.Every day we had the same routine. They called me some name (always the same name), I got upset and chased them to beat them up. They run, I chased. Sometimes I caught them, sometimes they run faster than me and got away.Every day. When I complained to my father, he made fun of me and gave me several ideas:
Just fill your pockets with sand, when they offend you, you throw sand in their eyes, this will hinder their run ...I laughed. My father laughed. We both knew I would not do that.I never  took sand to school in my pocket, but it was inspired by another of my dad's suggestions that I started using belts. And from then on, I spent all my breaks chasing the boys with my belt in hand.
The outcome did not change. I hit them sometimes, I missed them other times. But none of us ever gave up on out lil routine.
One day, we were all called the principal's office. Can you tell me what's going on here? That was my first visit to the principal's office (little did I know that would become a habitué)- They call me names and I run after them and hit them  with a belt when I manage to catch them.- What do they call you, Inaie?- Bruna Lombardi.Deathly silence took over the room. The principal took a while processing the information, before deliverying her final sentence:- This has to stop! If she does not like it, you can not do it. I personally would be happy  if someone  called me Bruna Lombardi, but that's irrelevant, my opinion does not matter. She doesn't like it, you can't ever do it again. Understood? The boys agreed. I confess I was really intrigued. Who the hell was this Bruna Lombardi? A Witch Lombardi, for sure. I came home and asked my mother (who also did not know what names they called me at reccess). She waited until the soap opera time and showed me who Bruna Lombardi was.

Bruna's pic
I almost fainted. She was gorgeous!I decided I  liked being called Bruna Lombardi, but I also knew (from the wisdom of my 7 years of age), it was too late.  I could not go back

The next day at recess, the same boys call me Bruna Lombardi for the umpteenth time that year, and run off (as if they had never visited the principal's office), with a smile, I took off the belt I was wearing and I run after them . Our routine never  changed, but something changed in my heart - and I made sure to be gentle when I caught them  ...

Coisas de Inaiezinha/ Inaie 33 years ago

Nem me perturbei, so respondi:

********************************

From time to time, my mother had a hissy fit and grounded me. Many times, I thought it was very unfair and it made me angry.I remember one time, I was   7, 8 years old and my mother grounded me for a week. I can not remember the crime, but the penalty was not playing with my friends for 7 whole days.
I found it unreasonable. But I obeyed.Around the third day, (if it was not before) my mother relented and said:- Inaie, you can go down and play with your friends. Not beating an eye lid, I simply replied:- You don't have any personality but I do. The punishment you gave me is one week with no play time, I'll inside our house till the end.And so I did. I have no idea what made me do it, but I simply stayed indoors for a whole week. And at that age, I'm sure it was not a genius strategy, but the truth is that my mother started thinking twice before grounding me, because when she did,  would just stick to it.

Tia Dora / Teacher Dora

Primeiro ano primario. Eu tinha 6 anos.
Juro. Um tapa.
Chego em casa e conto pra minha mae. No dia seguinte madrugamos na escola. Minha mae bufando...
Quando ela vai tirar satisfacao com a professora eu estou do lado, ouvindo a "conversa".
Tia Dora aquela vaca, diz:
- Eu nao bati nela. nao dei tapa nenhum nela.
Minha mae comeca a dizer que eu nao minto, a vaca professora olha pra mim e lasca:
- Eu nao te bati, bati, Inaie?
Meu sangue congelou. olhei pra ela e respondi em voz baixa, olhando pro chao:
- nao, nao bateu.

First year of school. I was 6 years old. I was happy about something I can't even remember, so I stood up and swirled with joy. I had a notebook in my hand and it almost hit a colleague.
My teacher at the time, went bizarck, run towards me and slapped me. Slapped me.
I went home and told my mum. I am not sure I have words to describe how upset my mother was. Next morning, we were both at the school, to talk to the teacher before class started.
- Inaie said you slapped her.
The woman says;
- No, I did not.
Before my mother had the chance to say I did not lie, that cow who called herself an educator, looks at me, and continues:
- I did not slap you, did I?
In a very small voice i replied:
- no. you did not.

I was only 6. I was terrified of her. My blood still boils when i remember it. She was supposed to teach me, to guide me, to inspire me. I Can't believe how wrong it went...

domingo, abril 15

Me lembro de quando a minha mae estava tentando me alfabetizar.
B + A = BA
B + E = BE
E eu odiava aquilo.
Voce aprendeu.
Ai me deu o maior remorso e eu confessei:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I remember when my mother was trying to teach me how to read. She would repeat ad eternum the letter combinations, expecting me to rememmber.
B + A = BA
B + E = BE
I hated it. Big time.
One day I we were driving in front of a shop and I read it's name : BAU!
She was so happy for my achievement, I felt guilty and confessed:
- Mum, i did not read it, I just recognised that word.
- But that's reading, Inaie.
I thought that was the most unfair task in the whole world. How could I memorise all words in the world? I was devastated...

Doncovim III - A moto/ Therapy - my bike

Agora me responde, ela pegava pesado ou nao pegava?
- Ok.
Desligamos
Liguei de volta. A secretaria dele atendeu
- Oi.
- nao precisa nao. So da o recado.
- Pai?
- Quebrou o chifre, Inaie?
- Quebrei.
- E agora?
- To indo pro Vera Cruz ( hospital), a ambulancia ja esta vindo. Alguem tem que ir me buscar.
A moto deu perda total. Meu pai ficou tres dias sem falar comigo. Minha mae foi me buscar no hospital - eu so quebrei a perna ( e fiquei 5 meses engessada).
Passou dias sem ir me ver, eu so o via passando na porta do meu quarto. Chamava e ele nao respondia. No terceiro dia eu chamei e ele veio.
- Pai?
- Fala
- Pai, nao vende a minha moto?

In the last session, in the last post, I was  my second year at university. I was 18, transfered my course to night shift, got myself a job because my dad did not want to give me a bike.
My first job was in sales for a 3M distributor.
A few months later, the company's best sales person left the business, my boss gave me her clients and the task to keep them.
I fought hard, I called everyone, I did my best and Iused all weapons I knew.Less than a week later I received a job offer from the company where she had gone. Sao Judas ( that was the company name)  was the largest distributor of 3 M abrasives. I was headhunted at the age of 19. There was only a little problem - their office was in Piracicaba. I lived in Campinas 75 km awayI took the job and for a few months I woke up super early, went from Campinas to Piracicaba (by bus), came back and went straight to university. I got home super late, just to start it all over again the next morning. When I started my evening course, also decided to enrol and have an university degree. She chose tourism - on the same campus, in the same building where I was studying jornalism.
Tell me if you think she played an easy game...
For the next three years I had my mother as a colleague at university. When I finally got enough money to buy my bike, my father came to me:- I heard you will buy the bike.- Yep.- You saved up enough money?- Yep.- Let me see your bank account statement.I showed it to him. He looked sad.- I will pay for it. I did not want you to have it, let me pay ...
The deal was simple. He would give me the bike.I had to get my driver's license and wear a helmet.
He bought the bike in a nearby town, it was deliverd to our house by truck. It was gorgeous!
Her name was Emilia.
I called my dad to let him know the bike had arrived.
- Don't leave home.- OkWe hung upI called back. His PA answered.
- Hi! Please tell my father I changed my mind, I'm going out on the bike did.- Talk to him, Inaie, he is here.- I don't need to talk to him. Please just pass on the message, please.
I went out to buy a helmet (no, I had no helmet). And the driving lessons were so bad I could do 8 around the cones, but did not know how to change gear and I could not stop the bike. As it would happen
, I hit a car at a busy intersection. As soon as I got help, I asked to use a phone.- Hello, mom?- Wait. Talk to your dad.
Yes, as soon as  my father got the message he drove home. He worked in Sao Paulo, we lived in Campinas ( 120 km).
When I called home he was already there.- Dad?- Crashed already, Inaie?- Yep.- What now?- I am going to  Vera Cruz (hospital), the ambulance is already on it's way. Someone has to pick me up there. The bike was totaled. My father didn't talk to me for three days. My mom picked me up from hospital the same day - I just broke my leg (and I was 5 months in a cast). When I was still wearing the splint on my leg and could not move, my dad avoided coming into my room. He spent days without going to see me, I just saw him passing in front of my bedroom and going to his.I called and he did not answer. On the third day I called and he came.- Dad?- Hum?- Dad,  please don't sell my bike.- You want to kill yourself kill yourself - I do not want anything to do with it ...He left the room again. The bike was insured, the insurance paid and I went back to biking ... or should i say I learned to be a biker?
