jantar / dinner party

I invited two couples to come over for dinner yesterday. They are my clients, people I like, but our relationship is mainly professional. I also invited Renata, my Brazilian friend.
At dinner time, Anita (who had gone out to dinner with friends) decides to join us and have dinner for the second time.
I'm happy. Until I realize she is in pajamas. That's right.
Everybody made an effort, dressed nicely and Miss Anita comes for dinner in her pj's...

Tentando arrumar desculpas, eu digo:
- Fim de carreira! Nós quatro sozinhas, bem no dia dos namorados...
Cada uma tem uma resposta plausível:
Lia - Eu NÃO tenho namorado.
ok Justo.
Justo tambem - eu concedo.
Elisa - Eu sou espanhola, meu marido é venezuelano. Prá nós, não é dia dos namorados!
Ai, ai, ai.
Então quer dizer que a única namorada abandonada e mal amada sou eu? Euzinha?
nisso ele me interrompe:

Today is the Brazilian equivalent of Valentine's Day. And I forgot it. I forgot it long ago, when we moved overseas and started celebrating Feb 14th, like everyone else.
So I went out with two friends and my youngest child. We visited an art gallery and then went out for dinner.
On the way to the restaurant, renata tells me it is Valentine's Day in Brazil.
Wow! Valentine's Day and the four of us going to an art gallery and then grabbing a bite in an Italian restaurant? Sad, sad, sad!
Trying to be funny, I say:
- The four of us alone, right on Valentine's Day ... How humiliating!
One by one, they excuse themselves:
Lia - I do NOT have a boyfriend.
Fair enough
Renata - My husband works on an oil platform, he is not even in the country.
ok, ok, I get it
Elisa - I'm Spanish, my husband is Venezuelan. For us, it is not Valentine's Day!
Hey! I get it. I am the only "unloved"one in this lot.
I call home.
- Fabio, I spent the day waiting to celebrate Valentine's Day, and you... he interrupts me:
- You left so quickly when I got home, i barely had the chance to say hello, but I bought you a lil something. I left on our bed, you can see it when you get home ...
Shame on me. He did not forget. I DID!

Dessa vez, convidei a Renata.
Renata pediu mil desculpas. Ficou vermelha, roxa e por ultimo púrpura. Ajudou a limpar o chão, a roupa da outra, pegou outro vinho prá mulher.

No wonder my friend Renata has her own "tag" in this blog. She deserves it!Today we went to a presentation at a local business. I belong to a networking group , and they are always organizing interesting events, so I try to participate as much as I can. This time, I invited Renata to come along. We arrived on time, had some juice, eat a few almonds, met lots of people. When I went to the bar to get another juice (or wine, 'cause I deserve it), all employees were chatting away and no one noticed me. I came back complaining. Renata said: go inside the bar and help yourself . You will see how everyone will serve you imediately. She said it on her way to the sofa, she had enough of standing up.In her escape route, she bumped into a woman, knocked her wine down, weting the floor, both their clothes and some scrambled paper the woman was holding.Renata was really apologetic and she made sure she mentioned it several times. She seemed to be really embarassed, and she behaved like the lady she really is. She helped the lady clean the spill, reassured her regret, organised a new glass of wine for the lady.
The presentation begins. The master of ceremonies calls Dr. X - the same woman Renata bumped into, goes on stage.Renata goes red. She looks very distraught. I look at the stage and burst out laughing. It was very hard to control myself, specially when all I can hear is:- F*** I ruined the speaker's notes!!If the woman did not deliver a goos speech, it was Renata's fault. I swear.

Bichinhos/ Lil pets
Ela ficou toda babada, toda enamorada do bichinho.

My friend Renata is not very fond of cats. She is a dog's person. Simple as that. Of course she would never do anything against a cat, but you will not see her going out of her way to cudle one. Ever.Another day, she went out to her garden and heard a noise on the roof of the house. When she looked, she saw a kitten. Her heart melted. She completely forgot about her dislike of cats, her maternal instinct took over - she was already imagining her new life with the gorgeous new pet.But then, the baby animal was frightened by something and ran off the roof, really fast! When she managed to take a good look at it, she realized the pussy was in fact a rat.
And Renata went straight back to despising cats. Simple as that.

E aí eu acreditei! And then I believed...
Você me conhece pessoalmente? Já me viu rezando? Pois é!
Lia viu.
Juro!

I am not religious. I believe in God, respect all religions, but I'd rather not be "catechized". I do not like people trying to convert me to their beliefs, even if they believe that this is my only hope.
But if you thought I was finally changing the subject and that I will now talk about something else than Lia's pain, you are wrooooong, my friend! The naturopath forbid most foods in her diet. When we have an appointment with her, Lia feels better, but when we go home, it seems the pain worsens. The naturopath who we sweetly call "the witch" says it has to get worse and then improve. This ia very hard on a mother's heart.
In addition to our visits to the witch, we are also trying visceral manipulation, other alternative medicine. My father and bothers in-law (who all happen to be doctors will have to forgive me), but when allopathy fails, mothers are allowed to try anything they want. The thing is, these things are helping, but are not resolving the problem. And seeing my despair, Tina, from "meu cantinho na Roça" offered to pray with me on facebook.I swear! We both come together in prayer on a social network site. And my daughter for the first time, enjoyed full night's sleep. The next day, my guardian angels Silvana (who is the most enlightened being that have crossed my path) and Renata came to pray with me again. You know me personally? 've Seen me praying? I know you haven't.
But Lia saw it. And she must have thought she was dying, because that could be the only explanation for her mother to pray and ask God to take away her pain.
The fact is that believing or not believing, the prayers were the only thing that took away Lia's pain. The day after we held the "prayer group" in my TV room, (which was followed by prayers of several virtual and "real" friends, my daughter went to school again. After two weeks living a nightmare, she returned to her routine. And it was playing football (he came home in horrible pain, but endured throughout the match). For who could not take two steps, this was a major win.Cirlei (my mother) who is an atheist, would also be amazed if she was here. I swear!

Três fadas/ Three faries
Eu a vi poucas vezes. Num café aqui, num jantar ali. E a sua presença leve sempre me atraiu.

It is unecessary to say I am pulling all my hair out with this painful saga Lia has endured.
And amid all this suffering and uncertainty, I once again find that angels are placed in my way, it never fails. It did not take long for them to appear here in the middle of the desert. At the moment, my Angels have names and live nearby.Renata appeared in my life, out of nowhere, we first met at a bar, in a farewell to a mutual friend. It's been over three years now. Neither of us gave the other any attention. Time passed, we kept bumping into each other. Destiny has it's own way of doing things.
We got closer, the friendship grew. And now, with Lia's hospital ordeal, she has been the closest person in my life. Aside from Fábio, who has also been amazing.
Renata who loves to sleep until late, has been waking up early to ask how is Lili. She went to visit at the hospital, even took a toothbrush wit her, because she knew I would need it. Renata is the person who stays with me on the phone when I'm pulling my hair out, not knowing what to do.After we got home, she was the one who took Lia and me to the naturopath , it was also her who went to the hospital with me at 2 am, when Lia felt so much pain, all I could think was to go straight back into hospital.Renata is a friend for good and bad times. But it does not end there . In addition to "invading" my life, she brought with her two other friends. Patrícia and Silvana also took upon themselves to help me go through this period of pain.
Patricia does not come alone. She brings with her, some heavy artillery. Her daughter gives lots of attention and affection to my girls, and every time Fábio and I are in a pickle, or we are sad about something, we get a call:- Can you guys come over?We do not even think twice, we clear whatever is on the agenda and run there. The ritual is always the same. Patricia feeds us, gives us some drinks and then her husband helps us scrutinize whatever is worrying us.The guy is amazing. Funny, entertaining and witty, he shares the knowledge of a life time in the Gulf with generosity. Several times he helped us see the path ahead of us with much more clarity. Several times we got there with a heavy heart and left their home feeling as light as a feather. This whole family was a blessing in our lives.
And there is Silvana. She is the most difficult to describe. She is always day dreaming. It took months for her to differentiate Lia from Anita ( one is brunette, the other is blonde). I saw her a few times. We met at coffees, dinners, girly meetings. I was always impressed by her light, but our interactions were very superficial.
But as soon as she found out about Lia, she came out with all her arsenal to help us.
In addition to the visits, the affection and gifts that she brought for Lia, she sent us to see her naturopath. The naturopath was the first to see Lia after we left the hospital. She was also the first to succeed in getting some colour into Lia's face.On our first visit, the diagnosis was a bit scary: allergy to 4 simple little things:Milk, gluten, sugar and rice. And she took the opportunity to cut oranges from Lia's diet too.I left the naturopath in tears. How can I feed a teenager without pizza, pasta, bread?Shortly after that, Silvana arrives at my house, with two gifts: a huge bag of gluten-free, rice-free, milk-free and sugar-free products, plus vouchers for a full treatment with the naturopath.
She thought it would be kind of hard for me to start with Lia's new diet, so brought the "starter kit" to help me out.
Every time I see Silvana, my eyes fill with water and I want to cry. I lose my words and I have no idea why I feel so comforted, so taken care of.
And this is all thanks to Renata who came into my life pulling a string of fairies!

Marketing direto
Passamos o dia no hospital. Fabio, Lia e eu.
Olha a conversa:
- Oi! O que ela tem?
- Dor de estomago. Nós estamos tentando descobrir o que é.
- Tomara que descubram rápido.
- É. Tomara.
- Então. Eu sou médico aqui.
- hmmm
- Reumatologista.
- ok

We spent the day in the hospital. Fabio, Lia and me. In the evening, Renata, Silvana and Khalifa came to visit us and it was really nice, the atmosphere was light, we chatted a bit, we laughed a bit and Lili got lots of affection and various gifts. With the full "house" , Fabio took the opportunity to leave, to spend some time with Anita, in the midst of this turmoil, she has not had much of our attention.A little later, Anita and Fabio returned to the hospital for the last visit of the day and a goodnight kiss. When everyone was gone, Lia felt bored, and we decided to walk up and down the hospital halls.Look at the conversation:- Hi! What does she have?- Stomach pain. We're trying to figure out what it is.- I hope they find out fast.- Me too. Hopefully they will.- I am a doctor here.- Hmmm- Rheumatologist.- Ok- If you need a rheumatologist, I'm available.- Thank you- Write down my number on your mobile- What?- Write down my number. if you need a rheumatologist or someone you know needs one, you can call me- Oh, ok.The guy spelled his name, phone number and made sure I had written it down right. To end his speech, he said:- I also take care of osteoporosis, if you want to come for check up, I am available. If you want to see if you have osteoporosis or if you are losing bone density, I am at your disposal ...
The thing is really bad here in Bahrain. Now doctors stay in hospital halls, chasing patients?

Enfim as lodjinhas/ After all, I found the shops
After days of culture and history, I deserved some window-shopping therapy, but before we could walk around the shops, we decided to visit the bizantin mosaic at St George's church. It is an amazing work , where you can see the oldest representation of Israel, the Holy Land and the Delt od Nile.
And now, the shops
The most gorgeous cups. I want them all.

Head pieces in all colours. Who said men don't care for fashion?
The most gorgeous cups. I want them all.
Marido tambem achou.
These fridge magnets look just like the South Park characters

Amman
Agora me redimo.
Agora fala a verdade.
Amman is gray and crowded. An ugly city. Well, I it say without remorse because that was exactly what I thought until I came across this. Now I correct myself. Amman is gray and crowded. An ugly city, until you come across this scene.Imagine you living in an ugly building, between many other ugly buildings, but having the view of a Roman amphitheater?
Oh, come on...
Than would be simply amazing!
We also visited the ruins of the Temple of Hercules at the Citadel. According to historians it was built between 166-162 AD.This temple ruin is bigger than any other found in Rome.
There is evidence that it was never finished
We also saw Umayyad Mosque, built in sec VIII. The dome is a modern adiction, that makes the construction look very odd. Dam " restaurators"...

Jerash - Ruinas Romanas / Roman Ruins
After all these tours of Petra - Petra at night, Petra during the day , Petra with crazy Bedouin ... Monica, Renata and I decided to enjoy our last day in Jordan visiting other places. We called the same driver that brought us from the airport to Petra and arranged for him to take us around for a whole day. We asked to leave early, to enjoy Jordan as much as we could.Destination: Jerash (where there are several Roman ruins), Amman ( hopefully visit theRoman anphitheater) and then back to Madaba where we will spend the night (this is the city of mosaics) and Renata and I will enjoy a little bit time the following day, 'since our flight is only 5 pm and the airport is less than 30 minutes away.
Jerrash is 48 km from Amman, the capital of Jordan, and its biggest tourist attraction are Roman ruins. There are signs of continuous occupation of this city in the last 6500 years.
Our first stop was on a high point of the city, where we could see the ruins from afar. I am ashamed to confess, but with the sun on my head and still upset by the annoying experience with the crazy Bedouin in Petra, I decided to stay in the bazaar with Renata, looking at the shops, while Monica enjoyed visiting the Roman ruins. I regret not visiting the ruins, but I was too tired and it was too hot.
The walls of the Old City and the new city merging with it
Muitas muçulmanas de abbaya em Jerash. Em Petra nao vimos tantas.
Many muslim ladies wearing an abbaya - we did not see that many in Petra.

O beduino maluco / Crazy bedouin
Pic from net
Graças a Deus nada disso aconteceu.
O beduíno ficou extremamente desconcertado, e pareceu ate preocupado.
Imagina o meu onde tinha ido parar.
SUBIU NO BURRINHO JUNTO COMIGO!
Minha ansiedade e meu medo aumentaram muito. Queria sair correndo e gritando histérica, mas correr pra onde? Correr pra quem?
Pedi pra voltar.
O beduino nao podia fazer nada comigo, então comecou a bater no burrinho dele, furioso.
Meu coracao gelou, mas eu nao falei nada. Pobre Monica.
O casal concordou, mas nao me deu muita bola nao.
O beduino ia pra longe e voltava onde eu estava, ia e voltava, ia e voltava.
Me defendeu comos e me conhecesse há anos.
Fomos ate a rua do meu hotel.
O molequinho estava enfurecido. E deu o cartão dele para elas me entregarem...
Será que ele achou que eu ia ligar?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
After a wonderful tour, where the Bedouin took me to see wonderful places, I got on Monica (the donkey, not the friend) and started the path downwards. For the first time during this tour, I was afraid. The Bedouin, who had been super kind and considerate, seemed like another person. Perhaps he had expected me to give gratuity to all his friends that gave me tea, maybe something I said or did upset him. I have no idea what happened. All I knew, he turned into an impatient and angry person, going down down the stairs in a rush, pulling the donkey ( and me).The first incident (yes, first) was when we were going down the stairs and he was running like a madman, disregarding the people coming in the opposite direction. The problem was I was on the donkey, but I had no control over it. And my knee was bumping into stones, trees, walls, and much worse - people.
I was getting worried. Before I could think it was my imagination, the Bedouin led the donkey so near the people who were caming up the stairs, my knee hit the chest of an old man who lost balance and fell. Luckily he landed on the top step, and did not roll down the stone steps.I was livid. I was afraid. The Bedouin approached the man,, tried to talk to the tourists who accompanied the old man, and then came back complaining it was all the old man's fault, as he had warned him to wait for the donkey to go by, but he did not listen.
HmmmShortly after, he began to get restless again. I did not understand what was happening, or what was distressing him. But this time things were more complicated for me. I fell off the horse's back.Literally. On a steeper curve Monica ( the donkey) stepped sideways, lost balance and off I went to the ground. I got my foot tangled in the stirrup and I was afraid of being pulled by a scared donkey leb by a crazy Bedouin.Thank God nothing worse happened. The Bedouin was extremely disconcerted, he even seemed worried. Some bedouin women came running up to me, offered me water, said their hearts skipped a beat.Imagine how I felt.I decided to walk, at least for a little while, to calm down, and make a proper decision. I was pissed off, I was angry, but I also knewthere was still a long way to go, it was darn hot and I hate exercising.
The Bedouin rushed in front of me and he was gone.
I asked a colleague of his to call him back, so I could to pay for the tour. I had a very good tour until we started our way back, he had to get paid for his good work. I would pay him what we agreed, but no tip.
He did not look at the money I was giving him. He vehemently refused.- I have not finished the tour. I promised I would take you back to the Treasury.I told him I was not going to get on the donkey. He agreed and walked besides me. He looked calmer. We walked a bit more and I felt I could get back to the donkey. We covered another good part of the return path. Gorgeous landscapes, sensational views ...Then he suggested we visited the Spring water. I agreed, thinking it was just another tourist attraction in Petra. The Bedouin then took a narrow path that was totally empty. No tourists nor Arabs, no Bedouins, or anyone. I was a little apprehensive. Then he said I would be able to undress and swim, if I wanted. I was nervous, almost histerical, but I had to think. I remembered him saying that many foreign women go to Jordan, in one day fall in love with a Bedouin man and move to the Bedouin camp. My spine chilled. The boy was not even 20 years old.I could not believe he wanted to "date"me. i could not be possible. I could easily be his mother.
As my mind tried to process what was happening, the Bedouin took the donkey close to some rocks and went on it. WENT ON THE DONKEY. WITH ME! My anxiety and my fear increased greatly. I wanted to go away running and screaming hysterically, but run where? Running for whom?I asked to go back. I said I did not want to see the spring water, I was tired and afraid of falling again, because the terrain was very rocky. The Bedouin became angry. He began to gesticulate and shout, complaining I said I would go with him to the spring water. That in his culture it was an offense to change one's mind. He said I did not trust him. He was furious. And the more he talked, the angrier he grew. I was terrified. Then, out of the blue, as if by divine interference, a lost couple showed up. They stopped the Bedouin to ask for information (the boy jumped off the donkey as quickly as he could, as if he could not be seen on it with me). I took advantage of the distraction and jumped off the donkey too.
I paid him, he 'did not want to receive the money, but this time I was not open for negotiation. There would be no more talking.
I asked the couple if I could walk with them. The Bedouin could not do anything, about it, he could not stop me, so he started beating up the poor donkey, furious. My heart sank, but I did not say anything. The couple agreed to let me tag along, but they did not seem very interested in me. There was no chit chat, no conversation. they were probably afraid I was part of some sort of scam.
The Bedouin went away and came back where I was several times. And each time he came near me, he said things that I did not understand. Angry. Screaming.I had already paid for the ride and the tour, I do not know what else he could want. I simply did not engage. I was afraid.Shortly after we reached the tourist path, the couple decided to visit some ruins I did not want to see. Actually, I did not want to see anything else. All I wanted to do was leave, disappear.I saw another couple and asked them the same favor. Could I please tag along? They were French.
It was my salvation, because the Bedouin lost it, he came my way, screaming and yelling. The Frenchman stood in front of me and said that the conversation was over. The Bedouin protested, but he was powerless to do anything but try to intimidate me. My French saviour could not care less, he simply defended me and protected me all the way to the Treasury. He did not even know my version of the history, he said if I did not want to talk to the guy, that was enough to him. The French couple escorted me up to the Treasury, then we realized a group of Bedouin boys were following us. They were about 4 kids. The French guy would say: let's stop two seconds here. We stopped the beduins passed by us, sat on the next available rock and stayed there. We'd pass by them, they would get up and continue to follow us. This happened over and over again, but by then I was no longer afraid.Because the boys did not seem to give up, the French couple decided to take me up all the way to the gate. The kids continued following us. The couple decided to take me all the way up to the reception of my hotel where they thought I was safe.
I went to my bedroom tired, but extremely grateful for the company, the protection and affection.Do you believe the crazy Bedouin found my friends, and Renata and Monica and went talking to them? He complained I did not go with him to the Spring water,Rant, he said he was not old enough to be my son, that he was ALREADY 19 years old ... he was angry, And trying to advocate his case to my girlfriends. In the end, he gave his card to them and asked them to give it to me. Did he really expected me to call?
