Tabefe no cozinheiro / My first cook
Ganho meu A e o ionspetor vai embora.
O cozinheiro, um Mexicano grandão me fala -
The health inspector came for the first visit afetr we opened the business and everything was going super well.
We received lots of compliments...until he saw an open cup of coffee on the bench. Serious violation.
My heart skip a beat and as a reflex I clinched my fist and hit the cook.
The cook - a big Mexican guy, just stared at me. I don;t think he believed what just happened.
I look at the inspector who quickly says -
I won't mark you down. Just don;t do it again.
I am not sure if he thought I would hit the cook harder after he left, or if he would be the next victim.
The inspector left, we got our A and the cook -
- You know that's not my coffee. It belongs to the guy from Corporate who is here helping us open...
- It may not be your coffee. But the kitchen is your responsibility, so you deserved the punch...
( what was I supposed to say?)

me dá um colo ai? can you hold me please?
- Amanhã eu tenho cabelereiro - você precisa me levar
- quero ir ao cinema. Vem me buscar?
Coisas banais.
Mas eu me sinto inadequada. Má e dona de um chapeu pontudo.
Apesar de dizer não. E fingir que não tô nem ai.
Terapia ni mim!
I have been feeling more and more out of place. I am not sure why the people I mix and mingle with today are so different from my past interactions.
Brazilians I met here are different from all others I met before.
They are generous. They help each other. They cook for each other and are always doing things together.
Things here are intense. And there is that unspoken rule that everyone needs to help everyone else.
And worse than that, people ask for help as if it was a given.
I know, I'm a heartless selfish bitch. I get it.
But I only ask for help when I'm desperate, I can not do it alone and neither can afford topay someone to do it, and it is life or death.
Ask my friend Yolhi what great help i am when people are shifting houses. I am not. I don't volunteer.
And I try to respect other people's space too.
Here, I've heard things like:
- Can I have a party in your pool?
- Give me the key to your gate for me to take my children swimming in your home when you are not there!
- I'll go on holidays and leave my children at your home (what?)
- Tomorrow I have hairdresser appointment - you need to take me
- I wanna go to the movies. Come and get me.
People ask for help with trivial things. Nothing serious. Everyone can live without the keys to the gate or without a ride to the movies or to the hairdresser.
But I feel inadequate in saying no, even though, that is my answer every time : NO!
I think I should book an extra therapy session. Soon.

eu - No Wild Horse
Today was Fabio's birthday and I spent the day with him at the shop. On my way there, i left my mother in law at the Cassino. on the way back, fabio offered to pick her up.
- Where did you leave her?
- Wild Horse cassino
he drove there and called his mother:
- I am outside, waiting for you.
- No Fabio, I am outside, waiting for YOU!
- You are probably in another exit. i will drive around the cassino.
Two rounds later, he decided to ask her what was the name of the place where she was.
Do I need to say i sent him to the wrong place?
Thank God he is a super nice guy and did not hold a grudge...

Eu sou a Nigela!! Nigela is my name!!
Eu O D E I O manteiga.
Açucar... açucar o fabio não come. Pula.
- Eu to de bobeira, posso adiantar a visita??
E lá veio ele horas antes do combinado.
L I G A D O.

Everyone who knows me, knows I cook a lot. NOT!
Today I woke up full of energy, with my heart in the kitchen and eager to make those wonderful cakes I never made before.
I decided to opt for a delicious carrot cake with chocolate syrup for the girls and apple crumble for Fabio.
I went to the internet and sought appropriate recipes, then went to the supermarket, bought the ingredients and went home super excited.
I mixed the carrot cake ingredients in the blender because I do not have a mixer and it's all the same thing, really.
I refused to butter the baking tray because I can't stand butter. I hate the texture, the smell, the taste too and there is no way I get close to butter. I used olive oil to prevent the cake from sticking to the tray. Genious.
So let's go back to the delicious carrot cake.
I calculated the temperature in F, decided how long it had to be in the oven and placed my gorgeous baking tray in there.
Two minutes before the scheduled time, I began to notice a burning smell coming from the kitchen.
I ran to the oven and could save the cake. It had a funny belly, was no way similar to the picture in the recipe but at least it was not totally burnt.
I cut off burnt edges and declared my first cake a total success.
So I moved on to the apple crumble.
As soon as I cut the apples. I realized I had no lemon.Or sugar ... Fabio does not eat the sugar, so we are all good. Oats ... forgot to buy oats too. I ran into the pantry looking for a good substitute for oats and returned empty handed. Shit!
Off I went, back to the supermarket, bought $ 0.50 of oatmeal and marched home, determined to finish my dessert menu. I did not buy lemons - no sugar, no lemons, or it would be unbearable.
I shredded coconut, pecans, oats (which now I had) ... and after all that, I realized I had to get GET butter pieces and mix with the other ingredients until they form a homogeneous snot.
I almost had a heart attack.
I hate butter. I have never, ever touched it in my life.
But I was not about to give up. I was going to make this bloody apple crumble. So I went to the pantry and found a pair of gloves I had bought to clean the toilets (and had not been used yet), put them on and off I went kneading butter.
Fabio, if u read this post, consider this the greatest proof of love that u have ever received. I kneaded butter with my own hands to make apple crumble for you. Wearing toilet cleaning gloves.
I followed the recipe, I adjusted the oven (temperature was now in F) and let fate run its course.
When time was up, I turned off the oven and went
An hour later, the annoying guy from pest control calls and wakes me up.
- I am around your house. Can I come earlier?
- Sure. I am here.
I found it odd that the smell of apples was in the whole house, but I did not worry too much. While the guy sprayed the house, I was pretending that I was busy, in the kitchen.
Imagine my horror when I looked up to the oven and it was still on!
O N.
I kneaded the butter with these little hands, and it may all be ruined.
Instead of 20 minutes in the oven, the apple crumble was there for 1:30.
I repeated the previous ritual. took all burnt pieces out, changed the bowl and declared the apple crumble a success.
Now all I had to sort out was the chocolate sauce for the cake.
According to the recipe, it was just a matter of mixing sugar, cocoa and butter.
I decided to use my culinary skills and tailor the recipe, leaving the butter out, so I would be able to eat the cake.
Suffice to say that the sauce was a little light. And soft. And had "pieces"os stuff in it, since I melted real chocolate and mixed with milk and condensed milk, but in the end, I think the whole day was a success!
Right?

Tenho dormido... I have been sleeping ...

At 11 am I am sleeping again, until 2 pm when I get up once again.

I used to be able to sleep standing up in lifts! What happened to that?

Fabio, acorda!!!! Wake up, Fabio!!!
- Fabio! Fabio! Fabio, acorda! Eu preciso te contar uma coisa...
Entre sonolento e assustado, ele respondia:
- Oi Inaie, o que foi?
- Não sei, eu me esqueci!
Me lembro disso com clareza. me lembro inclusive, de pensar:
- Claro!!!

Love is inexplicable and I finally understood this man really loves me. there are no doubts.
This story happened a few years ago.
Several nights a week, i would wake up screaming:
- Fabio, Fabio! Wake up, I need to tell you something.
worried, he would wake up and ask what was happening, but it would invariably be too late.
- I don't Know. I forgot...
And I would turn around and go back to sleep, while Fabio would spend the rest of the night awake, trying to do back to dream land.
I still don't know what was so important that I HAD to wake him up in the middle of the night. But I clearly remember the feeling, the sensation I felt.
It was so strong, so incredibly necessary, I knew I had to wake him up. And in between shaking him and him actually opening his eyes, the knowledge would leave me, until the next time it happened.
This dinamics went on for months, maybe even years.
Unfortunately I still have no idea what i had to share with Fabio neither does he. But we are still married. Fabio never killed me in my sleep, even though I am sure he felt like it

Eu sou um homem/ I am a man

Ponto.

After years struggling to figure out who i am, I finally understood a basic misunderstanding.
I am a man.
When someone says YES, I understand YES. When they say no, I understand NO.
This whole business of saying one thing and meaning something else totally escapes my understanding. And it exhausts me, so if you want me to know something, be direct. If you don't have the ability , don't even bother...
I also figured out I am Sheldon Cooper, from Big Bang Theory. I don't understand sarcasm.
Simple like that

Escondendo / hiding
O casal olhou, gostou e decidiu levar.
Carregaram, no maior sacrifício, o gaveteiro.

Fabio does not like my habit of selling things. He thinks selling little things, is not worth the money and it is too much work and effort!
I pretend I do not listen and continue selling.
A set of drawers here, a nightstand there ... and will slowly getting some some cash, since we'll have to buy it all again in Arizona.
It is my habit and it is not fair to ask Fabio to help carry the furniture I am selling against his will.
Today a couple came over to buy a dresser. I went into the TV room and said to Fabio: hidde for a while - otherwise you'll have to help carry the dresser.
The couple liked the piece and decided to take it.
The wife was quick to "offer help":
- I can take a drawer!
The guy looked at me, I put on my best poker face, then thought better of it and said:
- Look, I can help you guys. You two take the dresser, I will ask the girls to help me take the drawers.
Trapped, the husband asked his wife to help take the dresser from the second floor to his car.
She, unhappily, tried one more thing:
- Can you ask your maid to help?
- No, sorry. She is very tiny. I would not do that to her ...
Meanwhile, Fabio remained hidden in the TV room, the door closed.
After complaining a lot, she managed to help the poor man carry the dresser down. Lia, her friend and I took the drawers.
When we got downstairs, Fabio got out of the TV room, stopped and looked at us for a while.
They looked at me, stunned and I went straight back to my poker face.
Now tell me - what do you think of Fabio's hiding skills?

Sou uma mulher de palavra! You can trust me!
Eu estou vendendo o meu carro e outras coisas mais. Meu telefone toca dia e noite, insistentemente.
Subo prá mostrar a esteira, chega outra pessoa.
E ele queria o carro?
Queriiiia!

I'm selling my car and some other things. My phone rings day and night, insistently. It would drive anyone crazy!
Then today I got a call from a guy saying he was going to come see my car later. And he also asked me not to sell to anyone because he wanted the car for sure.
Then today I got a call from a guy saying he was going to come see my car later. And he also asked me not to sell to anyone because he wanted the car for sure.
He Insisted.
I agreed. His name is Sayed.
To make sure we would not make a mistake, I told Fabio, Sayed had preference in the car, but four other people were coming to check it out.
When I come home, a very nice guy is inspecting the car. He says he wants to see our treadmill too
While I go up to show him, someone else arrives. The other guy looks at the car, I don't give him much attention, and he leaves.
Sayed goes to the ATM with his wife, picks up the deposit, pays to secure the deal.
After it is all done, I say to my husband:

Fofoca/ Gossip
- Ah!
Ninguém nunca mais me contou nada.

Small communities are a pain. Everyone sees to take care of everyone else's lives.Recently I caught myself upset about it. People would come up to me and say:
- Because I am your friend, I muuuust tell you this person sad bad things about you.
First I got sad, then I got mad and decided on a strategy to solve this
- Oh no! I can not believe you are telling me this. Now I have to call her/him and ask what he/she was thinking when he/she said it.
And I would immediately get the phone and in front of the messager, I would call the person who allegedly said whatever I was told:
- Hello there! I have such and such here, saying you said this and that...and i want to know what the hell is happening.
I did it three times. No one ever bothered to come and gossip to me again. I am sure they still talk behind my back, but now I don't need to know about it anymore...

Guarda chuvas / Umbrellas
Eu DETESTO guarda - chuvas.
I hate umbrellas. I am not even sure why. It could be because it is ridiculously ugly, or because it is a pain to carry around. Or I may hate it with all my heart because most people who "wears"them, have no respect for others and often walk on the footpath as if they are the only ones there, sticking the pointy bits of the umbrella on other people's eyes.
Yes, I hate umbrellas and I hate umbrella users...
But as luck would have it, my darling husband LOVES umbrellas. And not your normal, discreet, small umbrella. My husband, an elegant and sophisticated man, insists in having one of those huge, colorful, disgraceful umbrellas (like the one in the pic).
And he uses them for rain and sun.
Do you like umbrellas? Can you please, please, please be careful with people walking alongside you? And if that's too much for me to ask, just hope I do not meet you and your rude umbrella, because I may just have a hissy fit!

mãe, sai do meu espelho/ mum, get out of my mirror
Eu sou a cara do meu pai.
- Nossa, você é a caaaara do seu pai.
E assim eu alicercei a minha vida, a minha imagem, a minha identidade.
As pessoas diziam:
Minha mãe estava me espiando numa lojinha em Petra, no bazar no Cairo.
Hoje a compania é constante.
E meus olhos continuam verdes...

I look like my dad. Or I looked like my dad, I don't know more. And this creates a hell of an identity crisis.
Since I can remember, I hear:
- Wow, you look so much like your father!
And with that I created the fundation of my being. That was my life, my image, my identity. I knew no different. I looked like my father. I was Ramalho. I came from Ramalhada - a neighborhood where most my family came from. We are all similar in appearance. My father and his three sisters look alike. My cousins and I look alike. Fact.
And for some reason that only Freud can explain, I have always been proud of this similarity.
I remember being 5 years old, when my eyes changed color. They were blue, like my father's and overnight they became green.
People said:
- What beautiful green eyes you have!
My reply was always the same:
- No! My eyes are blue, like my father's.
- Not any more. Now they are green.
And as the saying goes "against facts there are no arguments", all I could do was cry.
But recently, my mother moved into my mirror.
I'm walking around in my room when suddenly I stumble upon my mum staring back at me from my wardrobe's door.
I 'm distracted or brushing my teeth, when she looks at me, brushing hers too.
I already caught my mother following me on the streets, watching me through cars's mirrors, shop windows and the most unlikely places.
My mom was watching me even when I went to Jordan. I met her in several little shops in Petra, and in the bazaar in Cairo. She is everywhere.
At
A friend of mine wrote a post in Portuguese, about the changes she was experiencing, and how she looked more and more like her mother.
It was right when my mother started chasing me in all reflective surfaces.
At first it was a shy look, and she would soon disappear. But slowly she became bolder and bolder. Today her company is constant.
I look at any reflective surface and there she is, looking back at me - day or night!
The only thing that makes me smile, is to know that 25 years from now I'll be sneaking into Anita and Lia's mirrors too.
Dad, I miss you! And my eyes are still green ...

Passar á ferro/ Ironing
Odeio passar roupa. O D E I O.
- Ferro? De passar roupa? -pergunta o Fabio meio confuso
- Isso! - Respondo eu tentando ajudar a visita...
- Ah.

I HATE ironing. Always did, always will.
Once, when we lived in New Zealand, a friend of ours came to spend a week at our home. At some stage, she came, with a bunch of clothes in her hand:
- Where is your iron?
- Fábio, Renata wants to know where the iron is. Do you know?
- Iron? The one people use to iron clothes? - he asked, a bit confused
- Yes! I reply, trying my best to help the guest...
- I don't think we have one. Never saw one in this house... Did you see one?
- I think you are right. I don't remember ever seeing one either... I said to fabio
- Rê, we do not own an iron! I made sure to explain to Renata, who was listen to our conversation with a doubtful look on her eyes
She probably still thinks we did have an iron, but for some reason refused to let her use it.

Você fica brava? Do you get mad?

I love the teenager kids of one of my friends, and it seems they like me too. On Xmas Eve the older one asked:
- Do you get mad at your kids?
- Yep! I yell, scream, slap them, trow public tantruns...
- No, seriously!
- I swear! I have even yelled at some of their friends in several ocasions...
And just like that my fa club was dissolved!

Tá falando comigo? Are you talking to me?
- Ok. daqui a pouco ela vai lá e pega outra.

I just remembered a "situation"we had at the"all inclusive" hotel we stayed in Sharm El Sheikh, no Egito, em novembro.
We were sun bathing when the recreation girl approached us:
- The manager said your daughter has to wear her all inclusive bracelet all the time ( the one that signals to all employees we don't have to pay for any meal, snack or drink we order)
- ok. she will go to reception and get another one soon
- You have to wear it outside the facilities too
- And who the hell your manager thinks he is to dictate what me or my kids do outside your facilities?
- You don't have to wear, but for your own safety, you better wear it!
She said it and left, trying to avoid conflict.
And I can proudly say me and my kids cut the bracelet off everytime we left the hotel.

Cabeça de vento ? Air head?
Ai me dei conta que joguei a caixa no lixo! Ah quanta sabedoria...

The doctor prescribed me some medicine that cost U$50 a box. I bought it and came home.
Then I decided to leave half of the pills visible, so I would not forget, like I forget everything else.
Imediately after that I trew the box in the rubish bin ( with the other halp of the pills) and went to bed.
It is a pity the medicine was NOT for memory loss...

Eu sou um gênio! I am a genius!
Essa noite eu dormi 12 horas seguidas. Feito uma pedra!
Aí acordei, tomei banho e fui pro trabalho.
Lavaram a nossa rua. - pensei
Virei a esquina e a rua estava molhada. No proximo quarteirão idem.
- Choveu Inaie, choveu...
Isso é que dá morar no deserto. A gente perde a referência!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I woke up, had a shower and head to work, after sleeping 12 hours straight.
Right when I left the house I noticed the street was wet. Wow! They washed my street.
I turned the corner and saw the same thing. And one block away the street was also wet.
This scene continued until I got to the freeway, so I called Fabio.
- Hey! They washed all the streets in Bahrain. How cool is that?
- It rained Inaie, it rained...
I can not be blamed for my ignorance. I live in the desert, and I MAY have lost reference...

Mãe, sou eu! Mum, it's me!
E eu nunca tinha me ligado...
+++++++++++++++
My mother taught me to call home everyday, when I was away. And beinga good child, I always did.
- Mum, it's me, Inaie!
Until a friend of mine asked:
- But aren't you the only child?
- Yep!
- So when you say "mum" she knows it is you...
And I never tought of that...

That's just me! Eu sou assim!

Anita and Lia and I had an ice cream at the Cairo Museum Café. When the bill came, I realized they overcharged me - and I had already paid.
Very calmly I said to Fabio:
- They are overcharging. But there is no advantage in complaining. They will not accept they are stealing from us, will not give our money back and we'll just get p'd off.
I saw Fabio's eyes glitter! I finally understood what he is trying to teach me for17 years now. ( I could almost hear him repeat himself: never roll in the mud with pigs - you get dirty and the pigs enjoy themselves)!
I realized he was really proud of me. it made me happy.
Then I said: just go to the car and I will follow you soon. Next i heard my own voice:
- Waiter, the bill is not right. The ice creams are much cheaper than that, even with all the taxes...
The guy called his colleagues, they gesture, chat, wave their arms around...
They try to calculate it in many different ways, to show the world that they are right, and finally manage to come up with a "response":
Each ice cream costs 30 pounds (except that they are on the menu for FIFTEEN pounds) ...
I remember my own argument, curse a little , wave my arms too and walk away, leaving the waiters talking to themselves, with my money in their pockets!
I just can't help it.. I know fighting will not take me anywhere in this environment, but I am absolutely incapable of simply letting go.
I got into the car with a clear conscience and the assurance I did what I had to do, and felt a bit bad about fabio's disapproval looks..
