Enfim as lodjinhas/ After all, I found the shops

After days of culture and history, I deserved some window-shopping therapy, but before we could walk around the shops, we decided to visit the bizantin mosaic at St George's church. It is an amazing work , where you can see the oldest representation of Israel, the Holy Land and the Delt od Nile.

And now, the shops

Head pieces in all colours. Who said men don't care for fashion?

Fiquei enlouquecida com as xicaras. Queria traze-las todas pra casa.

Amman

Agora me redimo.
Agora fala a verdade.

Amman is gray and crowded. An ugly city. Well, I it say without remorse because that was exactly what I thought until I came across this. Now I correct myself. Amman is gray and crowded. An ugly city, until you come across this scene.Imagine you living in an ugly  building, between many other ugly buildings, but having  the view of a Roman amphitheater?
Oh, come on...
Than would be simply amazing!

We also visited the ruins of the Temple of Hercules at the Citadel. According to historians it was built between 166-162 AD.This temple ruin is bigger than any other found in Rome.

There is evidence that it was never finished

Malditos "restauradores"...

We also saw Umayyad Mosque, built in sec VIII. The dome is a modern adiction, that makes the construction look very odd. Dam " restaurators"...

Jerash - Ruinas Romanas / Roman Ruins

After all these tours of Petra - Petra at night, Petra during the day , Petra with crazy Bedouin ... Monica, Renata and I decided to enjoy our last day in Jordan visiting other places. We called the same driver  that brought us from the airport to Petra and arranged  for him to take us around for a whole day. We asked to leave early, to enjoy Jordan as much as we could.Destination: Jerash (where there are several Roman ruins), Amman (  hopefully visit theRoman anphitheater) and then back to Madaba where we will spend the night (this is the city of mosaics) and Renata and I will enjoy a little bit time the following day, 'since our flight is only 5 pm and the airport is less than 30 minutes away.

Jerrash is 48 km from Amman, the capital of Jordan, and its biggest tourist attraction are  Roman ruins. There are signs of continuous occupation of this city in the last 6500 years.

Our first stop was on a high point of the city, where we could see the ruins from afar. I am ashamed to confess, but with the sun on my head and still upset by the  annoying experience with the crazy Bedouin in Petra, I decided to stay in the bazaar with Renata, looking at the shops, while Monica enjoyed visiting the Roman ruins. I regret not visiting the ruins, but I was too tired and it was too hot.

The walls of the Old City and the new city merging with it

Muitas muçulmanas de abbaya em Jerash. Em Petra nao vimos tantas.
Many muslim ladies wearing an abbaya - we did not see that many in Petra.

O beduino maluco / Crazy bedouin

Pic from net

Graças a Deus nada disso aconteceu.
O beduíno ficou extremamente desconcertado, e pareceu ate preocupado.
Imagina o meu onde tinha ido parar.
SUBIU NO BURRINHO JUNTO COMIGO!
Minha ansiedade e meu medo aumentaram muito. Queria sair correndo e gritando histérica, mas correr pra onde? Correr pra quem?
Pedi pra voltar.
O beduino nao podia fazer nada comigo, então comecou a bater no burrinho dele, furioso.
Meu coracao gelou, mas eu nao falei nada. Pobre Monica.
O casal concordou, mas nao me deu muita bola nao.
O beduino ia pra longe e voltava onde eu estava, ia e voltava, ia e voltava.
Me defendeu comos e me conhecesse há anos.

Fomos ate a rua do meu hotel.

O molequinho estava enfurecido. E deu o cartão dele para elas me entregarem...

Será que ele achou que eu ia ligar?

After a wonderful tour, where the Bedouin took me to see wonderful places, I got on Monica (the donkey, not the friend) and started the path downwards. For the first time during this tour,  I was afraid. The Bedouin, who had been super kind and considerate, seemed like another person. Perhaps he had expected me to give gratuity to all his friends that gave me tea, maybe  something I said or did upset him. I have no idea what happened. All I knew, he  turned into an impatient and angry person, going down down the stairs in a rush, pulling the donkey ( and me).The first incident (yes, first) was when we were going down the  stairs and he was running like a madman, disregarding the people coming in the opposite direction. The problem was I was on the donkey, but I had no control over it. And my knee was bumping into stones, trees, walls, and much worse - people.
I was getting worried. Before I could think it was my imagination, the Bedouin led the donkey so near  the people who were caming up the stairs, my knee hit the chest of an old  man who lost balance and fell. Luckily he landed on the top step, and did not roll down the stone steps.I was livid. I was afraid. The Bedouin approached the man,, tried to talk to the tourists who accompanied the old man, and then came back complaining it was all the old man's fault, as he had warned him to wait for the donkey to go by, but he did not listen.
HmmmShortly after, he began to get restless again. I did not understand what was happening, or what was distressing him. But this time things were more complicated for me. I fell off the horse's back.Literally. On a  steeper curve Monica ( the donkey) stepped sideways, lost balance and off I went to the ground. I got my foot tangled in the stirrup and I was afraid of being pulled by a scared donkey leb by a crazy  Bedouin.Thank God nothing worse happened. The Bedouin was extremely disconcerted, he even seemed worried. Some bedouin women came running up to me, offered me water, said their hearts skipped a beat.Imagine how I felt.I decided to walk, at least for a little while, to calm down, and make a proper decision. I was pissed off, I was angry, but I also knewthere was still a long way to go, it was darn hot and I hate exercising.

The Bedouin rushed in front of me and he was gone.
I asked a colleague of his to call him back, so I could to pay for the tour. I had a very good tour until we started our way back, he had to get paid for his good work. I would pay him what we agreed, but no tip.

He did not look at the money I was giving him. He vehemently refused.- I have not finished the tour. I promised I would take you back to the Treasury.I told him I was not going to get on the donkey. He agreed and walked besides me. He looked calmer. We walked a bit more and I felt I could get back to the donkey. We covered another good part of the return path. Gorgeous landscapes,  sensational views ...Then he suggested we visited the Spring water. I agreed, thinking it was just another tourist attraction in Petra. The Bedouin then took a narrow path that was totally empty. No tourists nor Arabs, no Bedouins, or anyone. I was a little apprehensive. Then he said I would be able to undress and swim, if I wanted. I was nervous, almost histerical, but I had to think. I remembered him saying that many foreign women go to Jordan, in one day fall in love with a Bedouin man and move to the Bedouin camp. My spine chilled. The boy was not even 20 years old.I could not believe he wanted to "date"me. i could not be possible. I could easily be his mother.

As my mind tried to process what was happening, the Bedouin took the donkey close to some rocks and went on it. WENT ON THE DONKEY. WITH ME! My anxiety and my fear increased greatly. I wanted to go away running and screaming hysterically, but run where? Running for whom?I asked to go back. I said I did not want to see the spring water, I was tired and afraid of falling again, because the terrain was very rocky. The Bedouin became angry. He began to gesticulate and shout, complaining  I said I would go with him to the spring water. That in his  culture  it was an offense to change one's mind. He said  I did not trust him. He was furious. And the more he talked, the angrier he grew. I was terrified. Then, out of the blue, as if by divine interference, a lost couple showed up. They stopped the Bedouin to ask for information (the boy jumped off the donkey as quickly as he could,  as if he could not be seen on it with me). I took advantage of the distraction  and jumped off the donkey too.
I paid him, he 'did not want to receive the money, but this time I was not open for negotiation. There would be no more talking.
I asked the couple if I could walk with them. The Bedouin could not do anything, about it, he could not stop me, so he started beating up the poor donkey, furious. My heart sank, but I did not say anything. The couple agreed to let me tag along, but they did not seem very interested in me. There was no chit chat, no conversation. they were probably afraid I was part of some sort of scam.

The Bedouin went away and came back where I was several times. And each time he came near me, he said things that I did not understand. Angry. Screaming.I had already paid for the ride and the tour, I do not know what else he could want. I simply did not engage. I was afraid.Shortly after we reached the tourist path, the couple decided to visit some ruins I did not want to see. Actually, I did not want to see anything else. All I wanted to do was leave, disappear.I saw another couple and asked them the same favor. Could I please tag along? They were French.
It was my salvation, because the Bedouin lost it, he came my way, screaming and yelling. The Frenchman stood in front of me and said that the conversation was over. The Bedouin protested, but he was powerless to do anything but try to intimidate me. My French saviour could not care less, he simply defended me and protected me all the way to the Treasury. He did not even know my version of the history, he said if I did not want to talk to the guy, that was enough to him. The French couple escorted me up to the Treasury, then we realized  a group of Bedouin boys were following us. They were about 4 kids. The French guy would say: let's stop two seconds here. We stopped the beduins  passed by us, sat on the next available rock and stayed there. We'd pass by them, they would get up and continue to follow us. This happened over and over again, but by then I was no longer afraid.Because the boys did not seem to give up,  the French couple decided to take me up  all the way to the gate.
The kids continued following us. The couple decided to take me  all the way up to the reception of my hotel where they thought I was safe.
I went to my bedroom tired, but extremely grateful for the company, the protection and affection.Do you believe the crazy Bedouin found my friends, and Renata and Monica and went talking to them? He complained I did not go with him to the Spring water,Rant, he said he was not old enough to be my son, that he was ALREADY 19 years old ... he was angry, And trying to advocate his case to my girlfriends. In the end, he gave his card to them and asked them to give it to me. Did he really expected me to call?

Petra - so aventura! Petra - 100% adventure

Renata nao estava muito convencida e a Monica queria caminhar.

Today we almost missed breakfast at the Hotel - sleeping was so good ...We went down just 10 minutes before it was removed, there was almost no one else in the restaurant, no employees, no guests. We eat whatever we found, and went to Petra. To avoid misunderstandings, disappointments and hassles, we agreed that each of us would  be free to do what we wanted, see whatever we felt like, and if we lost each other,  or took different paths, we would meet up at the hotel in the end of the day. Before leaving Bahrain, I told everyone I would visit Petra on a donley. Walking did not appeal to me at all. Renata was not too convinced and Monica wanted to do it by foot.

This is the first part of the path, you can ride a horse or hire a chariot, if you want to. We decided to walk.

The jorney is simply gorgeous, walking between rocks that were excavated by water thousands of years ago, we see indescribable rock formations,  carvings on the stones that go back thousands of years. Each step is a surprise, every turn a new discovery.Amid all this magic, are thousands of tourists fighting to get the best shot, to find the best angle, to choose the best guide. These tourists are "served" by the Jordanians, many of them Bedouins, who live by the exploitation of local tourism. There are hundreds of people who make their living between renting horses or carriages to take you up from or down to Petra, rent donkeys or camels for you to explore Petra (yes, the government regulated the business and now the whole territory is demarcated. From Petra until the gate area of the "Treasury", are the chariots and horses. From there they are not allowed anymore and donkeys and camels take the stage. The camels are for the flat areas and the donkeys for steep jorneys or steps.

There are  hundreds of "street" vendors and shops where you can buy  necklaces and souvenirs of Petra. The most memorable image of Petra is, in my opinion the first glimpse you see of the Treasury, while you are just ending walking down the rocky maze, you suddenly come across a wonder of architecture, sculpture and historical  significance. It is jaw-dropping for any standard. (I put this picture as an opening of this post).

Then you stop for a lil while, have some fun observing the monument itself, the people around you, you check the first shops, take pics in front of the treasury and you are good to go.

After enjoying the Treasury, I rushed to choose my donkey.Imagine if I get there and there are no donkeys available...

Renata e Monica ( a outra)  decidiram ir a pe.

In the middle of the "donkey pool" I identified one that seemed well cared for and was also strong and young enough to handle the journey with the extra weight.
I negotiated the price, made sure i was "buying a return trip" and off I went on Monica. Yep, the donkey name was Monica!
Renata and Monica ( the human friend, not the donkey friend) decided to go by foot. Off I went exploring Petra with my donkey and my guide.

Dai pra frente foi so coisa bonita. Meio afoito, ele andava, andava, andava, de repente virava e me mostrava alguma coisa linda.
A paisagem e maravilhosa, as formacoes das pedras sao fascinantes, eu poderia passar dias ali, so observando a natureza.

From there onwards all I saw was beauty. My guide was probably not even 20 years old yet and was a beduin guy. A bit anxious, he would walk, walk, walk and out of the blue, turn the donkey around to show me a gourgeous site.
Petra is amazing. The rock formations are fascinating, I could spend the next few days, just sitting there, contemplating the beauty!

Andamos por trilhas estreitas, subimos escadas ingremes, visitamos ruinas de templos, cavernas, formacoes rochosas.E eu deslumbrada com a beleza do lugar e a hospitalidade do beduino.

We went on stunning paths, up steep stairs, we saw temples, caves and rock formations. And I was stunned by the beauty of the place and the hospitality of the beduin guide.

Perdi o folego frente a tanta beleza. Me deslumbrei.

Suddenly he took me down a deserted path, I could not see tourists anywhere. Before I began to feel insecure, he suddenly turned the donkey around and I saw the most magnificent view of the trip, just in front of me, I saw the Monasterio. From where I was, I could see people as small as ants and was face to face with the grandeur of this monument.Unbelievable to think all that was carved over 2000 years ago. I lost my breath in front of such beauty.
My guide then took Monica (the donkey) and me up to the entrance of the Monastery, he wanted me to enter it, but I didn't feel the slightest need to do so. To be able to contemplate the monument was more than enough!

I took lots of pics, enjoyed the view and then the beduin took me to another mount where he "parked" Monica, got some dried wood and made fire to brew tea for me.

Olha o foguinho ai
Look, we made fire! Ok, he made fire!

He even got a rock to be my "chair"

Mas ele continuava a me contar historias.

To have tea, sitting on improvised rocks, surrounded by nature and history going back more than 2000 years, was one of the highlights of my visit to Petra. The Bedouin told me stories of Western women who lived in their villages. According to him, there were already 35 women who fell in love with a Bedouin, their culture and tradition and decided to set up camp there. Literally.Thinking that the ride was over, I thanked the kindness and the opportunity to admire such beauty. I thanked him for his hospitality and kindness, but he continued  telling me stories.King Hussein went to Petra, spoke with the Bedouins and convinced them to move from Petra (the ruins) to a Bedouin neighborhood where he would build houses for  the families, so the kids could go to school, like every Jordanian.King Hussein also ensured  the Bedouins their right to explore tourism in Petra, as they have always done. The donkeys and crafts shops scattered throughout the site still belongs to them.I was already satisfied with the tour, could well leave, but once again the Bedouin surprised me.

He took me to the highest mountain, to see the "end of the world's view".

E parece mesmo o fim do mundo...
And it really looks like the end of the world...

Right there, on top of the world, there was a beduin tent, two bedouins playing an instrument similar to an eukalele, a lil shop sellin silver and other local stuff and another fire to make tea.
To refuse their tea is the same as to refuse their hospitality, so I had my fifth cup. Did I mention I don't like tea? I don't. But i did not travel this far to pick a fight with the locals or to be rude to hosiptable people, right?

When we were up there, we met three Italians and we tried to speak a mix os English/Portugues/Italian, we laughed, we had lots of fun and spent some precious moments. It was not only the interesting view and amazing atmosphere. The company also contributed.
Now we were done. All we had to do was go back to the Treasury where I would leave Monica and the Bedoiun and find my way back to Petra's gate.
I was still in AWE of the Bedouin's natural talent for customer services!
I wish my adventure finished right there, but unfortunatelly what came next was totally down hill - in so many ways, i will have to tell you tomorrow.

Petra a noite/ Petra at night

After spending the day visiting wonderful sites on our way to Petra, we finaly got to our hotel.Tired, hungry, but willing to make the most of our time there. The hotel manager was more than friendly, he sent us straight to the restaurant and organized the tickets for our night visit to Petra.

No escuro.
A estrada e longa e o caminho e deserto, e o lobo mau... Nao, errei a estoria!
E o charme desse passeio noturno e indiscritivel.

We ate and we were soon on our feet, ready to go to Petra, excited to see one of the most beautiful sites in the world. In the dark. The path is long, steep and dark - only lit with candles in paper bags. A beautiful and romantic scenery. The Jordanians were ultra friendly and kind to us.

Arriving at the Treasury, the central square, we find hundreds of lighted candles , also in paper bags.
The scene is jaw-dropping. A Jordanian man with a heavy arabic accent welcomes us , tells some beduin stories and introduces us to the artists performing tonight.

One plays an arabic version of the eukalele. Someone offers us tea (delicioso).Soon after another Bedouin plays the flute and we all walked back to town, delighted with the charm and hospitality of Petra. We barelly noticed how inclined the path was.
