Tabefe no cozinheiro / My first cook
Ganho meu A e o ionspetor vai embora.
O cozinheiro, um Mexicano grandão me fala -
The health inspector came for the first visit afetr we opened the business and everything was going super well.
We received lots of compliments...until he saw an open cup of coffee on the bench. Serious violation.
My heart skip a beat and as a reflex I clinched my fist and hit the cook.
The cook - a big Mexican guy, just stared at me. I don;t think he believed what just happened.
I look at the inspector who quickly says -
I won't mark you down. Just don;t do it again.
I am not sure if he thought I would hit the cook harder after he left, or if he would be the next victim.
The inspector left, we got our A and the cook -
- You know that's not my coffee. It belongs to the guy from Corporate who is here helping us open...
- It may not be your coffee. But the kitchen is your responsibility, so you deserved the punch...
( what was I supposed to say?)

me dá um colo ai? can you hold me please?
- Amanhã eu tenho cabelereiro - você precisa me levar
- quero ir ao cinema. Vem me buscar?
Coisas banais.
Mas eu me sinto inadequada. Má e dona de um chapeu pontudo.
Apesar de dizer não. E fingir que não tô nem ai.
Terapia ni mim!
I have been feeling more and more out of place. I am not sure why the people I mix and mingle with today are so different from my past interactions.
Brazilians I met here are different from all others I met before.
They are generous. They help each other. They cook for each other and are always doing things together.
Things here are intense. And there is that unspoken rule that everyone needs to help everyone else.
And worse than that, people ask for help as if it was a given.
I know, I'm a heartless selfish bitch. I get it.
But I only ask for help when I'm desperate, I can not do it alone and neither can afford topay someone to do it, and it is life or death.
Ask my friend Yolhi what great help i am when people are shifting houses. I am not. I don't volunteer.
And I try to respect other people's space too.
Here, I've heard things like:
- Can I have a party in your pool?
- Give me the key to your gate for me to take my children swimming in your home when you are not there!
- I'll go on holidays and leave my children at your home (what?)
- Tomorrow I have hairdresser appointment - you need to take me
- I wanna go to the movies. Come and get me.
People ask for help with trivial things. Nothing serious. Everyone can live without the keys to the gate or without a ride to the movies or to the hairdresser.
But I feel inadequate in saying no, even though, that is my answer every time : NO!
I think I should book an extra therapy session. Soon.

eu - No Wild Horse
Today was Fabio's birthday and I spent the day with him at the shop. On my way there, i left my mother in law at the Cassino. on the way back, fabio offered to pick her up.
- Where did you leave her?
- Wild Horse cassino
he drove there and called his mother:
- I am outside, waiting for you.
- No Fabio, I am outside, waiting for YOU!
- You are probably in another exit. i will drive around the cassino.
Two rounds later, he decided to ask her what was the name of the place where she was.
Do I need to say i sent him to the wrong place?
Thank God he is a super nice guy and did not hold a grudge...

Tenho dormido... I have been sleeping ...

At 11 am I am sleeping again, until 2 pm when I get up once again.
have you heard anything more stupid? Why can't I just sleep in one go?
I used to be able to sleep standing up in lifts! What happened to that?

Fabio, acorda!!!! Wake up, Fabio!!!
- Fabio! Fabio! Fabio, acorda! Eu preciso te contar uma coisa...
Entre sonolento e assustado, ele respondia:
- Oi Inaie, o que foi?
- Não sei, eu me esqueci!
Me lembro disso com clareza. me lembro inclusive, de pensar:
- Claro!!!

Love is inexplicable and I finally understood this man really loves me. there are no doubts.
This story happened a few years ago.
Several nights a week, i would wake up screaming:
- Fabio, Fabio! Wake up, I need to tell you something.
worried, he would wake up and ask what was happening, but it would invariably be too late.
- I don't Know. I forgot...
And I would turn around and go back to sleep, while Fabio would spend the rest of the night awake, trying to do back to dream land.
I still don't know what was so important that I HAD to wake him up in the middle of the night. But I clearly remember the feeling, the sensation I felt.
It was so strong, so incredibly necessary, I knew I had to wake him up. And in between shaking him and him actually opening his eyes, the knowledge would leave me, until the next time it happened.
This dinamics went on for months, maybe even years.
Unfortunately I still have no idea what i had to share with Fabio neither does he. But we are still married. Fabio never killed me in my sleep, even though I am sure he felt like it

Eu sou um homem/ I am a man

Ponto.

After years struggling to figure out who i am, I finally understood a basic misunderstanding.
I am a man.
When someone says YES, I understand YES. When they say no, I understand NO.
This whole business of saying one thing and meaning something else totally escapes my understanding. And it exhausts me, so if you want me to know something, be direct. If you don't have the ability , don't even bother...
I also figured out I am Sheldon Cooper, from Big Bang Theory. I don't understand sarcasm.
Simple like that

Escondendo / hiding
O casal olhou, gostou e decidiu levar.
Carregaram, no maior sacrifício, o gaveteiro.

Fabio does not like my habit of selling things. He thinks selling little things, is not worth the money and it is too much work and effort!
I pretend I do not listen and continue selling.
A set of drawers here, a nightstand there ... and will slowly getting some some cash, since we'll have to buy it all again in Arizona.
It is my habit and it is not fair to ask Fabio to help carry the furniture I am selling against his will.
Today a couple came over to buy a dresser. I went into the TV room and said to Fabio: hidde for a while - otherwise you'll have to help carry the dresser.
The couple liked the piece and decided to take it.
The wife was quick to "offer help":
- I can take a drawer!
The guy looked at me, I put on my best poker face, then thought better of it and said:
- Look, I can help you guys. You two take the dresser, I will ask the girls to help me take the drawers.
Trapped, the husband asked his wife to help take the dresser from the second floor to his car.
She, unhappily, tried one more thing:
- Can you ask your maid to help?
- No, sorry. She is very tiny. I would not do that to her ...
Meanwhile, Fabio remained hidden in the TV room, the door closed.
After complaining a lot, she managed to help the poor man carry the dresser down. Lia, her friend and I took the drawers.
When we got downstairs, Fabio got out of the TV room, stopped and looked at us for a while.
They looked at me, stunned and I went straight back to my poker face.
Now tell me - what do you think of Fabio's hiding skills?

Sou uma mulher de palavra! You can trust me!
Eu estou vendendo o meu carro e outras coisas mais. Meu telefone toca dia e noite, insistentemente.
Subo prá mostrar a esteira, chega outra pessoa.
E ele queria o carro?
Queriiiia!

I'm selling my car and some other things. My phone rings day and night, insistently. It would drive anyone crazy!
Then today I got a call from a guy saying he was going to come see my car later. And he also asked me not to sell to anyone because he wanted the car for sure.
Then today I got a call from a guy saying he was going to come see my car later. And he also asked me not to sell to anyone because he wanted the car for sure.
He Insisted.
I agreed. His name is Sayed.
To make sure we would not make a mistake, I told Fabio, Sayed had preference in the car, but four other people were coming to check it out.
When I come home, a very nice guy is inspecting the car. He says he wants to see our treadmill too
While I go up to show him, someone else arrives. The other guy looks at the car, I don't give him much attention, and he leaves.
Sayed goes to the ATM with his wife, picks up the deposit, pays to secure the deal.
After it is all done, I say to my husband:

And he wanted the car?
Yep, he did.
Ai, ai, ai!

Fofoca/ Gossip
- Ah!
Ninguém nunca mais me contou nada.

Small communities are a pain. Everyone sees to take care of everyone else's lives.Recently I caught myself upset about it. People would come up to me and say:
- Because I am your friend, I muuuust tell you this person sad bad things about you.
First I got sad, then I got mad and decided on a strategy to solve this
- Oh no! I can not believe you are telling me this. Now I have to call her/him and ask what he/she was thinking when he/she said it.
And I would immediately get the phone and in front of the messager, I would call the person who allegedly said whatever I was told:
- Hello there! I have such and such here, saying you said this and that...and i want to know what the hell is happening.
I did it three times. No one ever bothered to come and gossip to me again. I am sure they still talk behind my back, but now I don't need to know about it anymore...

Guarda chuvas / Umbrellas
Eu DETESTO guarda - chuvas.
I hate umbrellas. I am not even sure why. It could be because it is ridiculously ugly, or because it is a pain to carry around. Or I may hate it with all my heart because most people who "wears"them, have no respect for others and often walk on the footpath as if they are the only ones there, sticking the pointy bits of the umbrella on other people's eyes.
Yes, I hate umbrellas and I hate umbrella users...
But as luck would have it, my darling husband LOVES umbrellas. And not your normal, discreet, small umbrella. My husband, an elegant and sophisticated man, insists in having one of those huge, colorful, disgraceful umbrellas (like the one in the pic).
And he uses them for rain and sun.
Do you like umbrellas? Can you please, please, please be careful with people walking alongside you? And if that's too much for me to ask, just hope I do not meet you and your rude umbrella, because I may just have a hissy fit!

mãe, sai do meu espelho/ mum, get out of my mirror
Eu sou a cara do meu pai.
- Nossa, você é a caaaara do seu pai.
E assim eu alicercei a minha vida, a minha imagem, a minha identidade.
As pessoas diziam:
Minha mãe estava me espiando numa lojinha em Petra, no bazar no Cairo.
Hoje a compania é constante.
E meus olhos continuam verdes...
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I look like my dad. Or I looked like my dad, I don't know more. And this creates a hell of an identity crisis.
Since I can remember, I hear:
- Wow, you look so much like your father!
And with that I created the fundation of my being. That was my life, my image, my identity. I knew no different. I looked like my father. I was Ramalho. I came from Ramalhada - a neighborhood where most my family came from. We are all similar in appearance. My father and his three sisters look alike. My cousins and I look alike. Fact.
And for some reason that only Freud can explain, I have always been proud of this similarity.
I remember being 5 years old, when my eyes changed color. They were blue, like my father's and overnight they became green.
People said:
- What beautiful green eyes you have!
My reply was always the same:
- No! My eyes are blue, like my father's.
- Not any more. Now they are green.
And as the saying goes "against facts there are no arguments", all I could do was cry.
But recently, my mother moved into my mirror.
I'm walking around in my room when suddenly I stumble upon my mum staring back at me from my wardrobe's door.
I 'm distracted or brushing my teeth, when she looks at me, brushing hers too.
I already caught my mother following me on the streets, watching me through cars's mirrors, shop windows and the most unlikely places.
My mom was watching me even when I went to Jordan. I met her in several little shops in Petra, and in the bazaar in Cairo. She is everywhere.
At
A friend of mine wrote a post in Portuguese, about the changes she was experiencing, and how she looked more and more like her mother.
It was right when my mother started chasing me in all reflective surfaces.
At first it was a shy look, and she would soon disappear. But slowly she became bolder and bolder. Today her company is constant.
I look at any reflective surface and there she is, looking back at me - day or night!
The only thing that makes me smile, is to know that 25 years from now I'll be sneaking into Anita and Lia's mirrors too.
Dad, I miss you! And my eyes are still green ...

Você fica brava? Do you get mad?
++++++++++++++++++
I love the teenager kids of one of my friends, and it seems they like me too. On Xmas Eve the older one asked:
- Do you get mad at your kids?
- Yep! I yell, scream, slap them, trow public tantruns...
- No, seriously!
- I swear! I have even yelled at some of their friends in several ocasions...
And just like that my fa club was dissolved!

Mãe, sou eu! Mum, it's me!
E eu nunca tinha me ligado...
+++++++++++++++
My mother taught me to call home everyday, when I was away. And beinga good child, I always did.
- Mum, it's me, Inaie!
Until a friend of mine asked:
- But aren't you the only child?
- Yep!
- So when you say "mum" she knows it is you...
And I never tought of that...

That's just me! Eu sou assim!

Anita and Lia and I had an ice cream at the Cairo Museum Café. When the bill came, I realized they overcharged me - and I had already paid.
Very calmly I said to Fabio:
- They are overcharging. But there is no advantage in complaining. They will not accept they are stealing from us, will not give our money back and we'll just get p'd off.
I saw Fabio's eyes glitter! I finally understood what he is trying to teach me for17 years now. ( I could almost hear him repeat himself: never roll in the mud with pigs - you get dirty and the pigs enjoy themselves)!
I realized he was really proud of me. it made me happy.
Then I said: just go to the car and I will follow you soon. Next i heard my own voice:
- Waiter, the bill is not right. The ice creams are much cheaper than that, even with all the taxes...
The guy called his colleagues, they gesture, chat, wave their arms around...
They try to calculate it in many different ways, to show the world that they are right, and finally manage to come up with a "response":
Each ice cream costs 30 pounds (except that they are on the menu for FIFTEEN pounds) ...
I remember my own argument, curse a little , wave my arms too and walk away, leaving the waiters talking to themselves, with my money in their pockets!
I just can't help it.. I know fighting will not take me anywhere in this environment, but I am absolutely incapable of simply letting go.
I got into the car with a clear conscience and the assurance I did what I had to do, and felt a bit bad about fabio's disapproval looks..

Ninguém me influencia / I am not easily influenced
Thahy do Boticário.
I am a really well grounded person, with my own ideas, opinions and life standards. and I do not change my ways influenced by other people.
I just spent five weeks in Vietnam, at a friends house. And she is crazy for plastic sandals.
I personally never liked them.
My mom did not let me wear them when I was a kida nd they never caught my attention after I grew up.
I spent 5 weeks at her house, making fun of her sandals.
Then I went to London for a week, saw them in a shop and bought three pairs. because I may like it after i try...
And on the same thought, I called Fabio who was in Brazil and got him to buy me the perfume we wore when we were teenagers. Can you believe she still has it? And if she does, so do I!

combinou, tá combinado! Agreements are keepers
foto daqui
Aqui vale a mesma regra anterior.

For me, whatever is agreed, is what is expected, and it seems I don't have many people who feel the same way, unfortunately. Every now and then someone says: : girls, this Thursday morning, breakfast at my house. I grab my phone, I confirm the time, and book it on my calendar. For me, it 's a deal. I only call the person if for some reason I can not make it. If I can, I just stop at the flower shop, get a lil something and show up for our breakfast.
We had made arrangements for it, haven't we? And I had already confirmed my presence when I was invited. It seems strange, but for some people, the deal is far from simple. It seems like some people only consider the invitation "written on marble" when they call and reinvite you and get a second confirmation.
It amazes me how much time people actually have to waste. If neither you nor your host has Alzheimer's, the matter should not go that far. One invitation and one confirmation should be plenty.
But my strong opinions about etiquete does not end there. Did I promised to pick you up (because you have no car, can not drive or have panic attacks)? Please be ready at the agreed time. Of course from time to time everyone has an unforeseen setback and ends up late for a meeting. This is normal, and you should call the person waiting for you and let them know you are running late. But if you are late EVERY TIME, then you have to find yourself another taxi driver. Yes, this is no hypothetic situation. I have left people behind because they were not ready on time.
We agreed to meet in a cafe? In a restaurant? In a bar?I arrive on time so I don't make you wait for me. Would it be too much to ask the same courtesy? Here I apply the same rule as before. If you are only late from time to time, I smile and let it be. If the delays are compulsive, my reaction will depend on how much I like you. For these instancies, I have three basic strategies:1 - I send you to hell and throw my toys out of the cot. I simply don't play with you anymore.2 - I wait what I consider a reasonable time (eg 10 min) and then leave3 - if you're my best friend in the world, I simply start to be late too (which has proven to become a war without end)
Anyway, I'm 40 years old, can not waste time waiting for others.Call me a witch if you may.

Jordania
Nao consegui dormir a noite toda.
Cheguei, fiz meu check in e fui pro lounge tomar cafe e esperar o horario do embarque.
- Aqui e o check in?
Fui logo pedindo desculpas. E a Re, que e do bem, me perdoou.

I could not sleep all night. I woke up every hour worried I had missed the plane (I'm going to Jordan with two friends). By 5 am I was getting ready to go to the airport.
I phoned Renata to confirm where we would meet at the airport. I got there, checked-in, went to the airline lounge and had my breakfast, waiting for the boarding time.
Over an hour later, I see Renata coming into the lounge. I smiled, happy to see her. I noticed her expression was not the happiest. I had no clu what, but I probably screwed up. I was waiting for her to scold me or tell me what was happening. No way I would say the first word.
Arms crossed, big frown on her face, she asks:
- Is this the check in? Was it here where we agreed to meet?
Lucky I'm clever enough to guess I had just left her waiting for me at the check in. For over an hour while I enjoyed my breakfast, read magazines and played on the internet. I quickly apologized. And because Renata is an amazing person, she forgave me.
At 5 am I do not process things very well.. I spoke with her in zombie mode and completely forgot what we said!
I am lucky enough that she and is an enlightened soul and will not hold grudges against me. I am also lucky she is not into woodoo.
We spent a wonderful day in Jordan, but I will need to tell you all about it tomorrow, coz tonight I'm exhausted ...

So dou fora... If I kept my mouth shut...
- Voce veio tirar dinheiro ou esta so me esperando?
- Voce veio aqui pra me encontrar. Demorei?
- Voce e o Genorio? ( neme ficticio para proteger os envolvidos)
- Nao.
Nao acreditei. Claro que ele tinha que ser!
- Mas voce e o Genorio. Esta me esperando! Eu sou a Inaie!
- Nao.
Nisso sai do outro lado do estacionamento o tao esperado Genorio.
Pedi desculpas e sai correndo.

After a very busy day, i agreed to meet another client to discuss his kids schooling in Bahrain.
I never met this new client and we agreed I would come and pick him up from an EFTPOS machine, in a renowed club in the city. It was past 6:30 pm.
I arrive and imediately see him inside the EFTPOS cubicle.
being funny and cool as I am, I approach him:
- Are you cashing some money or just waiting for me?
The guy looks to me as I am an allien. Oh God, a client with no sense of humor, late afternoon... That's all I DON'T need.
After his long silence, I go back to boring mode:
- Hello Geruncio! ( name changed to preserve the identity of my client)
more silence
- Are you Geruncio?
- No.
At this stage non-Geruncio looked exasperated and worried
- I am Inaie. You are waiting for me. Your name is Geruncio.
sometimes it is very hard to communicate with some people...
And from nowhere ( from the other side of the car park, where there is no EFTPOS machine), Geruncio appears.
The poor stranger in the EFTPOS machine is probably telling everyone how this "cheap" woman tried to chat him up outside a family club in a muslim country.
If only I could keep my mouth shut sometimes...

BIRRA / Just like kids...
- Voce nunca me convida pras suas festas.

One of these days I met my husband's work colleague at a party. In between kisses, hugs and complains that we never, ever see each other, she said:
- And you never invite me to your parties. I hear they are amazing!
I am not sure what was her expectation, but my response was pretty quick:
- I know! Isn't that awfull? And I have never been invited to your house - ever. and you live her for over three years now...
Done. Dusted. Some people simply have no clue, sorry...

- Pois e. Nao tenho ido.
- Eu tambem nao. Que coisa, ne? Quanto tempo faz que nos nao vamos?
- Ah... Muito tempo!
- Faz mesmo. Desde o ano passado, ne?
- Com certeza!
Gentem, o ano passado faz uma semana. De onde saiu esse cara????
- E a zimbindin?
Talvez tenha ido embora.
******************************************************************
Today I went to a lecture about the Beyeler Foundation, and in the end, a gentleman came to talk to me:
- Inaie! I have not seen you in such a long time! How are you?
- Very well, thank you. And how are you doing?
I confess I had no clue who this guy was, but I still had hope he would give me a clue.
- Great! Great! Have you been to blumblumblum lately?
- No, I haven't.
blumblumblum? WTF is that? the clue is not coming! It is not coming!
- Yeah, I haven't either. How long since we last went?
- Seems like an eternity.
- Yes, I think last year was the last time.
- Sure was.
Hellooooo... last year was one week ago. Who is this guy?
- And how about zimbindin? Is she still there?
- I have no idea. HAven't heard from her either.
ZIMBINDIN??? And why I am getting more and more into this nonsense?
- She was the one who used to send me the invitations. Maybe she left.
- I think you must be right. maybe she did. And I am sorry, but I gotta go. My family is waiting for me for dinner. Lovely to see you. take care...
...and I left. Having no idea who the guy is, where did we use to go and who is this person who allegedly invited us... Now please tell me - WHY don't I just say to people: - Sorry, i have no clue who you are, I have no idea where blumblumblum is and never heard of zimbindin.
