Lia e o pe "nao quebrado"! Lia and the foot that was never broken...

This post will NEED pics...
Lia and her wheelchair, at Bahrain airport, waiting to board the plane to Sri lanka

Lia, being pushed to the truck that took us to the airport
Lia, no caminhao que leva deficientes fisicos ate o aviao

Lia, no aviao, tentando manter o pe levantado - por recomendacoes medicas!
Lia, in the airplane, trying to keep her feet up, as the doc ordered her to

Lia, enjoying the view, as she could not get into the water all the time...

Lia, tentando fazer o tempo passar...
Lia, trying to enternain herself...

A minha filha e do balacobaco!

************************************
If you know this blog, you are probably thinking this photo-soap-opera is very unusual around here. If this is your first visit, you probably think I am just booooring!
But I will explain.
Lia went to Sri Lanka just one day after she fell at school and the X rays showed a fractured bone on her foot.
As soon as we came back, we immediately went  to the orthopedic hospital, to have a new assessment,  a new X ray and check how much damage we caused on this trip.Because she swam a bit. She also walked. And she did not always wore boot. She even went snorkling once. Of course she was careful, she did not enjoy the place as much as she would if she did not have a broken foot, but we still needed to know what was the current situation.
We got to the hospital and the doctor (German) looked, listened and said:- I doubt that is broken. Just go, have an X-ray of both feet, so we can compare ...We went down to X-ray room, did what we had to do and went back to see the doc.- The foot is not broken. This image here,  where the other doctor thought there was a fracture is just an irrigation channel. It is taking blood into the bone.I was speechless, not knowing whether to celebrated "Lia's healthy foot" or to go crazy for everything she missed in Sri lanka.
The doctor even told her to go straight back to her sports. All of them. She plays soccer, volley and basketball.

This situation broke my heart in some many pieces, it is not even funny.

Lia could not enjoy her hols to the full, but she kept her high spirits and she was great company throughout the trip. This girl is just amazing!

Mulkirigala

Comprou! comprou!
O golpe so foi engracado pq ela nao tinha o menor controle sobre a coisa - eu so ia pagars e quisesse, ne? Paguei, claro!

We decided to visit a famous Buddhist temple in Mulkirigala before our hols were finished. As soon as we arrived and got out of the car,  we were sorounded by women tryint to sell flowers to us. There was no way we could visit the temple and not give flowers to Budha. Fabio bought a bunch and I bought another.
A very cute old lady (can not believe I did not take a pic of her!) applied the funniest "trick" on me.
She came closer to me with a bag of popcorn and asked me to hold it for her her. When I didt it, she started jumping up and down while she clapped, happy as Larry. All I heard her saying in the middle of her celebration was:You bought! You bought! It was only funny because "the trick" was totally relying on me wanting to pay for it. She had no way to guarantee she would be paid. I paid her, of course! Now I had both popcorn AND flowers for the Buhda, aren't I good? But when I told the guide  the Buddha would be happy with me, cuz besides the flowers I was taking popcorn, he laughed, shook his head and said: The popcorn is for you to eat!

Holding my popcorn bag and my flowers, I started frantically looking for a kid - any kid, who would be happy to take at least the popcorn from my hands. The lucky child was this gorgeous lil girl, who looked thrilled to get the bag off my hands.
The place is gorgeous and the temples are very different. Located on a rock boulder , the visitor  (yeah, i am talking about myself now) has to climb 533 steps to get to the higher temple. Holding popcorn and flowers, there would be no way I could manage that.

This temple is approx 2000 years and was made in caves. The access steps are irregular and difficult to climb - in some places they are just a stone dug vertically, where you have to balance on rails poorly maintained (rusted and with loose ends) to avoid going downhill. A true adventure!I climbed some steps, then had to lay down thinking I was going to die. I would get up, climb over a bit more and start praying and asking God for mercy when I passed ( it could not be that far). Fabio climbed all the steps without ever losing his breath.I do not know if I feel admiration for him or outright anger. At the time, anger was winning the context. Now I feel a trickle of admiration coming to the scene.

The complex consists of several temples, all placed in natural caves, and at different levels. You go up, up, up and find a group of cave-temples. Then you go up some more, more, more ... and find another level .. - There are four "levels" and most of the temples has a huge sculpture of the Buddha lying down. The main one and the largest, with 14 meters long is very impressive. (This photo is not of the Giant Buddha, I did not manage to get him in one shot)

But there is much more than reclined Budhas in Mulkirigala. There are lots of other things to be appreciated! First I saw this line of standing Budhas. I did not really give it a second though, as there was so much for me to take in. The wall and ceiling paintings, the whole decoration, the magic of being in such an old temple...

Fiquei intrigada. O Buda nao e um so?

Then I saw other Bhuda lines - this one, for example, with them sitting down. That caught my attention. How many Budha's were there? As far as I know, he was only one man. And I can not imagine getting into a church and finding 12 crosses with 12 Jesus nailed to them.
The answer to my question is simple: YES! Budha was a man, but there ares everal images of him, so the believers can pray or meditate in front of the statues.
And the Budhist people I met keep saying Budhism is not a religion, but a philosophy. I guess all religions can claim the same...

Salve Reis Sri lankos! Acabaram de ganhar meu respeito e a minha admiracao.

The place is amazing, and as I said many times, the Budhas ( lying down, sitting down, standing up...) were all very impressive, but the most mesmerizing thing I saw was images and statues of Hindi Gods INSIDE the Budhist temples.
With all the knowledge in the world, my Budhist guide explained the mistery:
Many Sri Lankan kings married Indian princesses and for them to be able to come and worship at the same place, the kings would place Hindi simbols in the Budhist temple...
Great sign of love and respect for his wife and her religion.
These kings just won my admiration.

The walls and ceiling paintings are super detailed and impressive - and they reminded me of the paintings I saw in the Valley of the Kings, in Egypt. But when you get closer, you see they are nothing alike. The Sri lankan paintings show very violent scenes. There are people-eating demons, neck-breaking demons, all sorts of demons, doing what their names suggest.
If you want to have a look at the details of these paintings, I found this amazing link with lots of pics of them.
have a look! It is worth it.

Amongst Buddhas, Hindu Gods, flowers and beautiful paintings, I did not resist and gave myself a minute to assimilate the wonder of everything I was been exposed to.I can only consider myself lucky to be able to visit such places, to experience the power and grandiosity of other culture's faith and to learn a thing or two throughout my journey.
Most of all I felt grateful for having the opportunity to enjoy all the energy and beauty of a place where monks and worshippers have been coming for over 2000 years!

Cheia de paz e amor pra dar, sai do ultimo templo me sentindo leve e renovada.
Ele imediatamente aprendeu a falar ingles e comecou:
100 RUPIS! 100 RUPIS!

Procurei o fabio e dei o dinheiro a ele.

Segura aqui!
Comprou! Comprou!

With my heart filled with peace and love, I left  last temple feeling light and refreshed. A very sweet old man insisted on making a white thread bracelet for me.I was thrilled, and very touched, as he sang and said Buddhist prayer while he made the bracelet right on my wrist. When he finished, he asked me for a "donation". Unfortunately, I had nothing with me. No money, no purse or pocket but I remembered that I had a coin in my camera's bag. And he asked for a donation, right? Not a specific ammount.
How wrong could I be?He immediately "learned" to speak English and began:100 RUPIS! 100 RUPIS!I found Fabio, got 110 rupis and gave him the money. But  I made sure to cut the bracelet off as soon as I got to the hotel. I think the blessings he recited and sang were not as sincere as I had imagined. What a pity! That really broke my heart.Back to the car, we once again met the same women selling things. This time, they were selling fruits and stuff we could take with us, no more presents to Budha or popcorn.
Immediately I spotted  my favorite old lady - the con woman, who  applied the same trick on me again, this time with a bunch of bananas. I let myself be deceived a second time:Hold this!
With a smile, I did just that! You Bought! You Bought! And she jumped and danced, happy as she could be. She asked me for 25 RUPIS ( I could buy a whole bunch of sweet sweet bananas for 1/4 of the thread on my wrist)I paid for my bananas and went back to the hotel even happier than the woman I left singing and dancing...

Dickwella?

Eu fui.
Alem de comida, eles tambem vendem roupas, brinquedos, plasticos...
Divido com voces as fotos!

Dickwella is a very small town right in the South of Sri lanka and is the closest "place" to Dickwella resort, where we stayed.
There isn't much there. A few shops, one mini market ( poorly stocked) and lots of people, cars, buses and tuc tucs.
On Saturdays they have a street market. Similar to many street markets. they sell fruits, veggies, spices, clothes, toys and whatever they can think og. The difference is the location. You can see the see from this street market.
Imagige how amazing to shop with a sea view.
Here, I share the pics I took.

olha a feira ai, gente!
street market...

meu filhote na feira
my daughter at the market

Do you think Fabio wants to buy a bucket?

vai uma pimentinha ai?
Chilli, anyone?

 E a vista pro mar?
Can you see the sea?

 Depois das compras...
After their shopping spree

E no meio da rua, o Tuc tuc que nos levou pra casa...
And in the middle of the street, the tuc tuc that took us home...

mais Sri Lanka / More Sri Lankan stories

Piscina do hotel - ta vendo o mar no fundo?
Hotel's swimming pool - can you see the sea on the back?

Dickwella resort was the only hotel that still had vacancies when we had our holidays. I read and re-read all the comments  at trip Advisor, bookings and any other site I could put my eyes on.
We went there fully aware of what we would find: a very well located property ( in terms of nature - as it is far from everything else) that needs to be renewed urgently!

And that's exactly what we found. A gorgeous setting - the resort is in an amazing bay sorounded by incredibly pretty beaches. And yes, it needs some urgent TLC.

The staff is friendly (but the cleaning crew only see the obvious - we had a spider web in our batroom for a week) , on the other hand, they placed beautiful flowers on our beds every day.

E alcool claro.
The SPA is good, but very pricey, specially if you consider Sri lanka prices. The food is ok and they don't have natural juices. That is right! No fresh juices. Only cordials, soft drinks, water and alcohol!

A vista do restaurante e maravilhosa. Dava gosto acordar pra tomar cafe da manha vendo as ondas batendo nas pedras...
The restaurant view is to die for. It was worth waking up to see the waves on the rocks ...

What made me sad was to see lots of stray dogs who chose to live in the premises. The dogs are allowed there, but not cared for, so it is this shameful show of very slim, sick dogs, begging for food and affection.
In a buch near our room, i found this new born babies - they could not be more than a couple of days old.
Broke my heart!

Salve as tartarugas! Save Sea Turtles!

The turtle farm and hatchery is in South Sri Lanka, close to Galle. They are a non profit organization who's aim is to protect the sea turtles and make sure the next generation will be able to see them.

Unfortunately there are people who steal the eggs laid by the turtles and sell, eat or keep them as souvenirs. Some well intentioned people believe the egg will hatch under their care. But this practise only endanger the species.

At the turtle farm, they collect the eggs from the beach and keep them safely inside their organization. All the lables on the pic show you how many eggs are in each group, when they were laid and what species will hatch from the eggs.

When the eggs hatch, the baby turtles are placed in a big sea water tank and kept there until they are ready to be reintroduced to nature.

Eu peguei! Eu peguei! Eu peguei!
I held it! I held it! I held it!

The farm only keeps one adult animal of each species, and from time to time they rotate the adult, so no turtle will spend it's whole life in captivity

This noosy turtle came to " talk" to everyone who got close to her tank

E dorminhoca tambem. Ficou embaixo dágua dormingo, durante toda a nossa visita.

This is by far my fav. Turquoise in color, she was the prettiest of all. And sleepy too. She stayed under the water, sleeping thought out our visit.

The Farm was founded in 1986 and more than 500 000 turtles were released into the Sri Lanka ocean. Not a bad achievement at all, I would say.

Interesting facts about the sea turtles ( information provided by the Sea Turtle Farma nd hatchery)

The turtles are one of the rare species found in the world. Their heritage could be traced to more than 100 million years.
There are 8 Sea Turtle varieties in the world today.
They are an endangered species.
Sea Turtles meet in certain areas one a year to mate. The female then comes to the shore to lay the eggs on the beach. It is said they lay the eggs on the same beach they were born. They lay the eggs at night.
Female turtles only lay eggs when they are 30 years or older
Each sea turtle lay an average of 120 eggs each time.
The eggs look like ping-pong balls
The female turtle lay the eggs, cover them with a protective juice that keeps them moist and leaves. She does not keep contact with her eggs or the babies.
The warm sand helps the egg to mature and after 60 days 5 cm turtles hatch out and make their way into the ocean to restart the cycle.

Os pescadores do Sri Lanka/ Stilt fishermen from Sri lanka

A foto desse post e minha.

******************************************

The picture in this post is mine, but the story is not. After publishing a post with beautiful photos stolen from the internet and no information about the fishermen of Sri Lanka,Ernani ( from a brazilian blog called Madruga em Claro) gave me a slap on the wrist and because respond  well to "constructive feedback"  I pulled up my socks and went on a wonderful research to find out about the stilt fishermen of Sri lanka.

It is difficult to know how and why the stilt fishing tradition started. Some say the fishermen used to fish from rocks. There were two problems with this practice - there were not enough rocks for everybody and the fish would have to get very close to the rocks to be caught.
With these difficulties in mind, some clever fishermen, decided to "plant" some stilts on the water, making fishing acessible to everyone.
When the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, it destroyed the stilts and the tradition almost disappeared.
The stilt fishing is typical of Southern Sri Lanka (where we stayed) and today there are about 500 families who continue passing the tradition through generations.
Despite being one of the strongest images of Sri Lanka, this activity is not easy.
It is hard to climb on the stilt, and it takes a lot of patience to wait for the fish to come around. The fishermen use no bait, only the hook - and the fish is attracted only by it's movement in the water.
When the fish is finally caught, it is generally very small and sold for less than 10 cents each.
And the challenges do not end there.
many tourists are very curious to see the stilt fishermen, and come to this region specifically for it. Tourists who swim in the sea and play with the waves, making the fish look for quieter areas to be in.
