A testa abriu.
Minha mãe abre a porta, meu estomago gela.

******************************

I lived in a compound, one with many, many children. Everybody loved playing in the street. Playing in the street was still allowed back then. Firstly because it was not quite a normal street,  it was inside the compound, only residents had access and there were security guards everywhere.
One night I went out to play, I was about 9 years old, my hair was very long, reaching the middle of my back. I never  combed my hair and I still don't . To be honest, I don't owe a comb or a brush. I swear. I always washed my hair, passed my fingers through it, and I was done. And that day when I got closer to the other kids, the started calling me "the seven seas witch". I asked the to stop, they did not. Seven seas witch! Seven seas witch! Seven seas witch!  My blood waswarming up. Seven Seas witch!!  Seven Seas...I do not remember having anything planned, but I still remember the scene in slow motion. One of the boys came out from behind the car where they were all hiding and I trew a stone on his direction. It landed on his forehead. The forehead opened. There was blood everywhere.I run home and pretended nothing happened. I was scared. My mother must found it strange the fact I was home so early, but she did not ask, I did not tell. Two hours later, our doorbell rings, it was the boy's parents. They had just arrived from the hospital. The boy had a few stitches in his forehead.
My mother opened the door, my stomach froze. I heard Alessandro's mother (this was his name) asking if they could please talk to me.I went to the living room, what alternative did I have, anyway? The boy trembling, says:- Inaie, I am sorry. I should not have called you the Seven Seas Witch. My mother looks at me incredulously, but before any of us had the time to say anything,  the family marched back to their house, leaving me speechless.I do not remember the rest of the story. I do not remember being grounded,  having suffered any consequences for my actions, I think that was the end of the story, really, but I can say  those two hours were the most terrifying of my childhood. I knew that bell would ring sooner or later ...
Alessandro  sadly passed away in a car accident when he was 17 years old. At the time of his death, were good friends. He turned out to be a fine guy ( maybe the stone helped?) I do not remember ever apologising for hitting him, but if you're listening, Ale, I apologize now.
I just wanted to scare you guys, make you stop. I never imagined I would be so good at it ...

Bullying e vingança / Bullying and revenge

Eu tinha 9, eles tinham 13, 14...
E me zoavam. muito.
E tenta me passar uma cantada.

- Hey!! Nós já nos conhecemos!! Eu me lembro!!

- Nope. Continuo igualzinha, só um pouco mais velha!
- Você ficou linda!
( e que me perdoem os que me acharem convencida, folgada e egocêntrica, mas a resposta eu dei de boca cheia e me senti de alma lavada.)
- Você está enganado. Eu sempre fui bonita. Vocês é que eram selvagens demais prá perceber...

Ser evoluído não é prá qualquer um. Eu reprovei nessa matéria! Mas passei nas aulinhas de inglês.

***************************************

I was 9 years old at the most. My mother always made me go to English classes, even if it meant a two hour journey in a bus. Alone. And there I was going twice a week, Aguas de Lindóia to Serra Negra, to learn some English. And my classmates were all dumber older. I was 9, they were 13, 14 years old ...And they made fun of me. All the time. Made fun of everything I did or said,  they made fun of my name,  laughed at the fact that I was in another city, teased me for knowing more than they did ( ???).Everyday after class, on my way to the bus stop, a group of idiots came following me and messing with me.I was sad. I hated to go to Serra Negra, hated learning English and was always thinking of ways to escape from that torture. But I never told anyone. I was terrified of my mum going to the school, talking to the kids, calling their parents. the mess and the embarassment would be too big for me to handle.
Many  years passed. One day, I was once again on that same bus that took me from Aguas de Lindóia to Serra Negra, but this time I was on my way home from university. I was 17 years old, I had changed a great deal since I was 9.
As luck would have it, one of the bullies from the past sits right next to me in the bus.The first thing he tries to do is chat, he is obviously trying to impress me.
Our age gap is not so big, I look at him and I see a sad young man. Nothing special, no light in his eyes.
At that moment, I had two options: I could be an enlightened being, or return to the cave era and be a savage.I gave him lots of attention. I let him think he was  handsome. I talked to him, faked interest (he seemed surprised, I don't think he was very popular with girls), I knew he would get out of the bus on the next town. Shortly before reaching the bus station, I pretended I realized something really important:
- Hey! We've met before! I remember!
- It is not possible, I would not forget ...
- We met ! We had  English classes together.
- No! I still keep in touch with the people I studied English with...
- So you remember me-I am Inaie.

In a second, I saw the scenes of abuse flash before his eyes. he was embarrassed, he looked down, I think he wanted to disappear ...

- But you, you ... you look different ...
- Nope. I look exactly the same, just a little older!
- You look beautiful!(And forgive me if you think I am full of myself, but the answer I gave him helped heal my soul)
- You are mistaken. I've always been pretty. But you were all too stupid and shallow to look at me properly ...

Foi Bullying? Was it bullying?

Ás vezes eu acertava, as vezes eu errava.

- Eles me xingam e eu corro atrás deles e bato neles, quando eu consigo alcançar.

Ela espera o horário da novela e me mostra a Bruna.

Quase desmaio. Ela é L I N D A!!

I remember being a little girl, about seven years old and having some boys annoying me in the school playground during our breaks.Every day we had the same routine. They called me some name (always the same name), I got upset and chased them to beat them up. They run, I chased. Sometimes I caught them, sometimes they run faster than me and got away.Every day. When I complained to my father, he made fun of me and gave me several ideas:
Just fill your pockets with sand, when they offend you, you throw sand in their eyes, this will hinder their run ...I laughed. My father laughed. We both knew I would not do that.I never  took sand to school in my pocket, but it was inspired by another of my dad's suggestions that I started using belts. And from then on, I spent all my breaks chasing the boys with my belt in hand.
The outcome did not change. I hit them sometimes, I missed them other times. But none of us ever gave up on out lil routine.
One day, we were all called the principal's office. Can you tell me what's going on here? That was my first visit to the principal's office (little did I know that would become a habitué)- They call me names and I run after them and hit them  with a belt when I manage to catch them.- What do they call you, Inaie?- Bruna Lombardi.Deathly silence took over the room. The principal took a while processing the information, before deliverying her final sentence:- This has to stop! If she does not like it, you can not do it. I personally would be happy  if someone  called me Bruna Lombardi, but that's irrelevant, my opinion does not matter. She doesn't like it, you can't ever do it again. Understood? The boys agreed. I confess I was really intrigued. Who the hell was this Bruna Lombardi? A Witch Lombardi, for sure. I came home and asked my mother (who also did not know what names they called me at reccess). She waited until the soap opera time and showed me who Bruna Lombardi was.

Bruna's pic
I almost fainted. She was gorgeous!I decided I  liked being called Bruna Lombardi, but I also knew (from the wisdom of my 7 years of age), it was too late.  I could not go back

The next day at recess, the same boys call me Bruna Lombardi for the umpteenth time that year, and run off (as if they had never visited the principal's office), with a smile, I took off the belt I was wearing and I run after them . Our routine never  changed, but something changed in my heart - and I made sure to be gentle when I caught them  ...

Bullying

Algumas vezes eu me importei muito. Outras me senti humilhada.

*****************

Anyone could write a book on this subject, I am sure!Reading Mr Lemos' blog (oh infinite source of divine inspiration ...) I also decided to talk about it, although I know I can not be as eloquent as he is.  With Mr Lemos, there is no context. It would be stupid to even try.

But besides the lack of literary talent, I also lack a firm view on the subject. Oh dear, here we go...Bullying - is wrong! IT IS CRAP AND MUST END NOW!This is the easy part of the deal. Everyone agrees on it, we all applaude and campain in favor of, but...What is bullying?
That's a whole different ball game. And I am not sure I can answer it. Of course there are the obvious cases. But most of the stories, in my opinion, are in reality, border line, a step away from the good side and not yet in the realm of evil.

I will tell you where I got it from.
I was bullied at school. A lot. In many different schools, in many different ways. I was always different,  my peers always made fun of me. Sometimes I cried. Othertimes I felt really humiliated.
Sometimes I chased the agressors, other times, I simply did not care. And in other situations, my life away from school was going so well, I thought the bullting was funny, and the bullys, loosers.
But the experiences thought me to be tough, to stand up for myself and to celebrate the differences. At some stage, i realized it was a gift to be different, thatw as the path I chose, so I better make the best of it.Anita ( my younger child) also had this same crisis, a few years ago. Shee said she was different, she did not fit, it was hard to cope with it. I wondered what to do, my heart sunk.
I tried to be as honest as possible. I explained to her that being different has a price and that price is high. tTat she would have to choose whether she was willing to pay it or not, and the decision could be heavy on her shoulders.
But I asked her to think long and hard before making her decision. I asked her to look around and see that there is also a price to be like others. And this price is not lower. In fact, it can be much higher sometimes.

But in my opinion, (and who I am to have such a strong opinion?) The lowest price to pay is the price of being who you are. Different, unique, the same, blue or pink. It's always easier to be who you really are in your very core ...
And I've always been different, and learned to live with the consequences of my choices.
What I hear in life is:
- But you're different.
- Damn, you're so different ...
- But your opinion does not matter.
You're different
- Ah!
You do not care. You are just different
No one  could ever explain to me what this is difference I hear so much. I keep asking because I do not think I'm different from anyone or anything, I think it's pretty ordinary, actually. But after hearing the same thing over and over, I must admitt I am probably different, I still don't know different from what or from whom. But if everyone is saying it, it must be true!

And I do care about others think or say, I just choose to do whatever I think is right, regardless of their opinions...

e agora, José? What now?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Imagine a couple married 17 years. With two gorgeous teenager girls.
Got it?
Now imagine the husband accidentaly lost the wedding ring.
Right.
The wife is still "thinking" what to do about it...

My grass is greener than my neighbor's

Sério, não to zoando.

**************************************************

My lack of luck is probably putting me up there with the guineess most unlucky person in 2012.
Whith no intentio to make this post into a whinning post, I'll make a short and objective list of our recent mishaps, just to prove that I am neither a liar nor a compulsive moaner
- With the political crisis in Bahrain, we are almost certainly not going to have the means to stay here after August.- We do not have a job in another country and the economic crisis is in full swing - the employers are not knocking on anyone's door  and there are no jobs falling from heaven either  (not that I know)- Lia had 5 weeks of excruciating stomach pains, visited every possible hospital and doctor in town and we still have no clue what happened. The pain subsided, but we still have no diagnosis.

- The whole family is having difficulties in dealing with the uncertainty of our future My reporting line changed and instead of having an amazing boss, but instead, I reportto the most insecure, power freak of all times. My professional life was a bed of roses, but is gradually turning into hell.

- We had several high extra costs this month, all from different and unavoidable reasons.
I have two more dramas I can not disclose in the blog in an ill attempt to protect the people involved, but if you are a regular reader of this blog, you know I tend to talk about everything. If even I think that talking openly about it is crossing the boundaries, imagine how bad these issues are.

Believe me, if I told you, you would pity me. A lot.
With this avalanche of "misfortunes," in my mind, I open the local newspaper and the headline reads:19 people die in fire in a day care center in a shopping center in Qatar.Let me explain: 13 children, four teachers and two firefighters died asphyxiated in a fire in a daycare center at Villagio Mall in Qatar. The reports are confirming that neither the nursery nor the shopping met basic safety rules. Fire alarms did not work properly, the rescue team was slow, the nursery was in an almost inaccessible corner of the mall, the fire doors were locked, there were no emergency exits accessible to people who were in the kindergarten ... and the list of unfortunate hic ups ( or irresponsibilities) was huge!A kiwi family lost  2 year old triplets. A Spanish family lost three children of different ages. Seven other families lost their children and six adults (all foreign workers) died in the fire.An unspeakable tragedy. Readin these news, i realised I do not qualify for the guinness competition, and realized  perspective is a wonderful thing in life ...
My grass is definitely much, much greener than the neighbors' grass.

Trauma prá vida toda / Scars for life...

++++++++++++++++++++++

Fábio and I raced each other to the TV room. I always play to win, so there would be no way I would let him beat me, so when I won, I burst into teh room yelling:

- I WON!

In the TV room, my younger child was entertaining a friend. I slammed the door closed and rushed back up. I was on my underware.
After I changed, I got back to the TV, told my daughter off and explained to the boy there was no way I was paying for his therapy. he better find a way to get out of the trauma himself...
