Xmas

I think Santa got confused and delivered some orphanage's gifts to our place...

My dad comes to visit after many years and the first thing he says is:
- Darling, you need a maid.
Yep. I know! I so know it...

Uma mãe qualquer... A mother...

- Alô, a senhora acordou a menina?

This is a fictional history. Facts and characters have nothing in common with my mum real people.
- Tomorrow can you please wake my kid up and let her know I need her to be at the shop at 10 am?
10:30 and nothing...
- Hi! Did you wake her up?
- I slid a message under her bedroom door...

Ahhh, ok then

Motoristices / Drivers

Ele é a face da empresa, a unica pessoa que tem contato com os clientes. Olha as gracinhas que eu tenho que enfrentar todos os dias ;

- Oi. Cheguei aqui. Já estacionei. Onde é a entrega.

- Oi. Cheguei.
...e eu pensando... e eu com isso?
- Só tenho uma pergunta.
- Diz
Dentro, querido. Dentro.

In my catering business, one of the most important positions is the driver.
He is the face of the company, the only person who has contact with customers. Even though the position is so important, I have to deal with lots of crap everyday...

- Hi. I am here already. I have parked already.  Where is the delivery?
- Look at the address I gave you. It is in the invoice.
- But it says 25 'floor and the garage only has six floors.
I don't know if I should answer or cry. The garage is where we park the car. The deliver needs to be made to the address on the invoice!

- Hi I am here..
... and I thought ... why are you telling me this?
- I only have one question.
- I am listening
- Am I supposed to deliver inside or outside the office?

What should I reply? Just drop the food at the door and run... Oh, wait, you better just deliver it to the employees in the office. They will enjoy it better than the rabbits.

minha mãe / my mum

- Ah! Não fiz. Reciclei todas as latinhas de alcool.

My mum is coming to work with me every day, and she helps a lot.
Today i specifically needed help with some chips bags and asked her if she could come and make them.
A few minuets before I had to get them delivered, i went to check on her progress:
- Mum, where are the chips bags?
- What chips bags?
-The ones I asked you to make.
- I decided to do something else... look, I recycled all the sternos...

Lingua de Trapo / Foot in my mouth

- A Lisa.
- É minha esposa...

Então você deve saber do que eu estou falando né????

My pest control guy came to the kitchen today and told me his sales person left.
I was said and mentioned:
- I had a problem with one of your phone people being rude to me, but Gloria fixed it pretty quickly.
- Who was rude?
- Lisa
- Ah...she is my wife...

Oh dear... so you know what I am talking about...

Recolhendo tudo / Pick up

Espero não me superar!

##############

Part of the work we do is pick up all mess after the breakfast or lunch. Chaffers, bowls, jars of sauce, cutlery, wicker baskets, tablecloths, napkins ...
We take a trolley with two large plastic boxes and just box everything, then take to the kitchen, where everything is washed andsanitized.
This week I went to do my pick up and  realized I had taken the dolly and boxes of the trunk. The client is 30 km from the kitchen -  There was no way I would be able to drive back, get the things and make back in time.
After considering several options ( sit on the curb and cry/ quit the job/ call them and say I had an accident/ pray for a miracle) I finaly came up with a solution. I walked in, head high, acting as it was just another routine pick up, I organized everything, piled things up, unfolded the table cloth, wrapped everything in it, and left like a gypsy.

I think it was the most ridiculous thing I had to do in this job. I hope I don't have to exceed my level of ridiculousness any time soon.

O zoológico escatológico / The scatological zoo

A nossa casa tem animais lindos!
Our home has amazing animals!

Mia é a nossa primogênita.

Mia is the oldest. She has been with us for 6 years now and lived in New Zealand, Bahrain and is now in Arizona.

Simba came to our life around November, he is just a kitten, but we love him dearly.

Sammy was my Xmas gift ( from a neighbour)  and I just adore him.

Todo mundo é paparicado nessa casa.
They are all spoiled here...

They get the best sits on the sofa...

But they are so ungrateful, sometimes I have second thoughts...

This week Fabio and the girls were travelling and Simba and Mia decided to poo in very "creative" places to show they miss them. They pooped on the Tv room carpet, on our Persian rugs, in the living room...

As if it was not enough, I forgot the living room open and sammy that stupid tortoise decided to come inside and hide under the side table - and threw my Iranian Tea set on the floor...

And to close the day on a hogh, I realized I am not strong enough to carry Sammy out, so I put him on a blanket and dragged him out ( under Mia's close supervision). The beast felt treatened and peed all over the living room. YAY... NOT!

Don't be surprised if OI make "that"phone call to the local zoo today...

domingo, julho 27

E finalmente perdi a paciencia e demiti meu cozinheiro bocudo na sexta feira. E que more relativamente perto.

I finally lost my patience and fired my cook on Friday.  I spent the whole weekend interviewing new people for the job.

On Monday I had someone else chosen for the job and he started right on time. He cleaned, he scrubbed, he prepared a couple of things and I was happy with the outcome.
He worked for the Ritz Hotel before, has some experience, just arrived in town and seemed to be happy to get a job. I was happier.
He is Mormon and my Mormon friends kept telling me how lucky I was to have him on board and how God was going to bless me and our kitchen.
I believe there are good and bad people in the church - exactly the same as outside the church. Being religious does not mean you are good. And obviously, being an atheist does not make you bad.
On his second day I found out he lived far away and was spending 4 hours a day on a bus. I could not imagine such sacrifice, so I offered to give him an advance, so he could move closer to the kitchen and be at work without such effort.
The very next day he did not show up to work, and we had lunch for 25 people to serve.
I can't cook. The client had to have the food delivered to them. I was in a real pickle.
So I called my franchisor, got him on a speaker and after two hours we had this wonderful meal cooked for the client.
I did not have a driver either, so after cooking, I put the food in my car and delivered it!
Today my kitchen was an one man band. A man who is actually a woman, is tone deaf and can't sing to save her life.
But we survived...

And tomorrow I will have another cook hired. And three different orders to deliver!

terça-feira, julho 22

Ora façam me o favor!

As minhas e as dele.
Me saí super bem. Recebemos muitos elogios e deu tudo certinho.
HA!

I have a confession to make. One that will not make me more popular, or more like-able. A confession I should probably keep to myself, but my mouth is always bigger than it should be...
I do not like managing people.
Simple as that. I just do not like it.
I think every one should know what to do - and do the right thing. Don't get me wrong.  I do not mind training people. Give them guidelines. Set expectations. That's all good.
The problem starts when I have to use the carrot/stick strategy.  Prize and punishment for performance?
I believe in recognition, in career advancement and all sorts of rewards for a job well done, but I feel the corporate world became more like a kinder garden environment where you reward grown ups with stars and stickers.
But as life changes all the time, here I am, playing businesswoman housewife kitchen and having more time to manage people.
As we are a company that is starting, when hiring, I made it clear that everyone would be cross trained and required to step into each others shoes, when required.
This week, my best driver's car broke and I had to ask  my cook to help me with deliveries.
The cooks was obviously unhappy about it and started complaining about distances, waiting periods, volume of work...
He was slamming things in the kitchen and swearing more than normal.
I had no doubt. I put it all in my car and made all deliveries for the day. And the next. And the following.
I know things will get even worse, there is nothing much to do about it and I should start looking for his replacement.

Soon.

I told you I do not like managing people? Well, I don't. And I have a temper.

Desaprendi tudo ! I un learned everything !!

Me julguem!!

I have recently changed my computer and can~t find a way to get my key board to use Brazilian signs and punctuation. Now I feel like a total iliterate person. Write even worse than before - in two languages.

Oh Dear...

CV

++++

I am recruiting a new sales person and today i received the funniest CV ever. Out of the blue, she writes:
- I am slim and good looking.
I wonder if she swapped the CV with the one she sent to the strip club!

Meu mundo caiu ? My world fell apart

CERTO!!!!!

SAmmy is my newly acquired tortoise. I have had him for six months and I super enjoy feeding him and watching him be super active and happy.
In our house we are very conscious about our pet's nutrition and both our cat and dog don't eat sweets and rarely eat human food. we keep them on a very healthy dry diet. Sammy is no different. Being an herbivore, we let him feast on fruits and veggies.

View image.jpeg in slide show

E o Sammy comeu muitas uvas

He enjoys his grapes

View image.jpeg in slide show

Uma variedade sem fim de vegetais

And lots of vegetables

View image.jpeg in slide show

Se esbaldou com os morangos

Strawberries are his favorites

View image.jpeg in slide show

E caçou amoras na grama

And he searches for blackberries on the grass

Legumes idem...

Ah que saco!!

Acabaram com a minha farra!!!! E a do Sammy também!!!

And then I found out tortoises are not supposed to eat any of this. At all. They are to survive on GRASS!
They said fruits and veggies are not good for the tortoise and they can even die from eating it.

I am sooo sad, I don;t even know how I will break the news to him.

Um dia perfeito/ A perfect day

The alarm goes off  and I realize I'm late. damn  phone. I still have not learned to deal with it's alarm.
I jump out of bed, get my gym clothes and  throw myself in the car. I have a few minutes to get to the kitchen.

In fact, today we have no orders. I do not even need to open the business, but as our sales lady is out of chips to bring to customers, I decided to call the whole team in.
The cook will make chips, the driver can help pack them (and then go advertise too), the saleswoman to help with the bags ... and I always can do bits and pieces.
But today will be a stress free day - I even booked yoga for 10 am.

I get to the kitchen on time and no one was there yet. Everyone was late to work.
Then the driver call in sick

Mexe daqui, mexe dali, resolvemos ir ver o disjuntor.

The cook arrives and finds out our slicer is not working.
We investigate and after putting the whole thing apart,  we decided to go check the breaker. On our way to the breaker I scent horrible smell and I  I see  the bathroom  has flooded and there is water everywhere. SHIT! Literally.
Instead of crying, I keep trying to solve the slicer issue. One problem at the time is my new slogan. When I was ready to give up and take it to the mechanic, I decide to try one last thing and plug it in another outlet.
Voila. The problem is not the slicer, but the kitchen's electricity. (Which is worse?)

Com o problema do cortador resolvido, me dedico a resolver a merda do banheiro.

Slicer problem solved, I move on to fix the bathroom issue. First comes the plumber and tells me  the toilet clogged, flooded and unclogged itself all alone, during the weekend. If I believed in ghosts, i would have a good explanation.
Just to be safe, I tell him to re install the toilet seat and seal whatever he needed to seal, to avoid it from happening again.
The guys finish their job and leave me with a bathroom full of shitty water  (sorry there is no other name for it)

I cancel my yoga class and keep asking myself: , Do I buy a rubber boots? Or one of those fisherman's overalls? Do I return the building to my landlord? Or simply go out running and screaming?
I decide to call  specialized sewage cleaning company (thank you to a friend - as I never imagined there were people specialized in doing this kind of job)
The guys come all cheerful and smiling. They are well-dressed and have lots of machinery with them. They vacuum, rinse, disinfect, vacuum again and leave.
The day is almost over and instead of relaxing, all I did was deal with shit. Literally.
Tomorrow will be a better day. And Brazil will win the game. My cook is Mexican - not sure how it will be to work together on Wednesday...

Moderna / Modern

Digitei o endereço do blog e as letrinhas continuavam minusculinhas.
Enorme, pesado e trambolhento.
Nada moderno, nada chic...

I needed a new lap top to work from home, since mine is on its last legs.
I arrived at the store and went straight to see the MACs. Modern, light, beautiful.
Then I remembered  when I moved windows 7 to windows 8, I almost threw my laptop against the wall. Embarassed, I gave up on learning a whole new operational system and decided to stick with Microsoft. I am almost good at Windows 8.
From there, I went for a very sleek, cool lap top. Thin, light, quick. Just what I wanted. But the letters were too small and I decided to go for a slightly larger model, a little less light, but as fast as the other. I typed in my  blog address and realized the letters were still not big enough for me.
Ashamed I admitted my shortcomings and  bought one that resembles the kitchen's sink.. Huge and heavy.
Not modern. not funky. Not cool. Just a dinosaur.

Exausta / Tired

Hoje ele me viu chegando e disse:
- To indo ai consertar a sua maçaneta!
Agora eu vou dormir!!

O pobre ficous em entender nada. Nem favor a pessoa aceita???

My door knob is broken and my neigbour has offered to fix it for me.
Today i got home from work and he run:
- Let's get that fixed!
- I was so tired all I could say was:
- NOOOOOO!! I am going to sleep now!!
It was not even 5 pm and I am sure he never received such reaction when he tried to help other people before...

me dá um colo ai? can you hold me please?

- Amanhã eu tenho cabelereiro - você precisa me levar
- quero ir ao cinema. Vem me buscar?
Coisas banais.
Mas eu me sinto inadequada. Má e dona de um chapeu pontudo.
Apesar de dizer não. E fingir que não tô nem ai.
Terapia ni mim!

I have been feeling more and more out of place. I am not sure why the people I mix and mingle with today are so different from my past interactions.
Brazilians I met here are different from all others I met before.
They are generous. They help each other. They cook for each other and are always doing things together.
Things here are intense. And there is that unspoken rule that everyone needs to help everyone else.
And worse than that, people ask for help as if it was a given.
I know, I'm a heartless selfish bitch. I get it.
But I only ask for help when I'm desperate, I can not do it alone and neither can afford topay someone to do it, and it is life or death.
Ask my friend Yolhi what great help i am when people are shifting houses. I am not. I don't volunteer.
And I try to respect other people's space too.
Here, I've heard things like:
- Can I have a party in your pool?
- Give me the key to your gate for me to take my children swimming in your home when you are not there!
- I'll go on holidays and leave my children at your home (what?)
- Tomorrow I have hairdresser appointment - you need to take me
- I wanna go to the movies. Come and get me.
People ask for help with trivial things. Nothing serious. Everyone can live without the keys to the gate or without a ride to the movies or to the hairdresser.
But I feel inadequate in saying no, even though, that is my answer every time : NO!
I think I should book an extra therapy session. Soon.

Vai um rim aí?? Would you like a Kidney?

I have always heard about stupid messages people receive on their blogs, and I have never experienced it. Sometimes people come and tell me off, call me names. Nothing I haven't experienced in real life before...
Until now.
TodayI open my inbox and that's the message I find:

Sem palavras, me retiro por hoje.
